Dileep Rao’s new book shows business owners and high-growth entrepreneurs how to find the right financing for their growth

In his new book, Finance Any Business Intelligently™, Dileep Rao, senior lecturer in strategic management and organization and faculty advisor for the Gary S. Holmes Center for Entrepreneurship, shows business owners and entrepreneurs the best ways of financing their business.

The book draws on Rao’s 23 years of venture financing experience that included the successful financing of more than 450 companies. It is designed as a practical handbook to equip mid-size business owners and new entrepreneurs with the tools they need to establish their business financial goals, hone their business structures, and develop the tactics to execute them successfully. A key feature is a four-step process that teaches business owners how to make financial decisions and find the right financing for their business. By enabling entrepreneurs to determine the right financial structure for their companies at the critical early stages of raising capital, the book helps them balance their needs for equity and control in their venture with their goals.

“Many entrepreneurs and business owners are experts in their industries but often fail because they have little knowledge of how to properly finance and run a business,” says Rao. “The funding choices they make can be absolutely critical to the success of their companies, yet many function under the misguided notion that venture capital is the only route. The right financing will help them reap the rewards of their efforts while the wrong financing will help others reap the rewards of their efforts.”

A second book is in the works. Finance Any Business Intelligently™ will be followed by Find Equity, Debt & & Low-Cost Financing Intelligently ™.

Rao teaches entrepreneurship and venture financing in the Carlson School MBA program and is an entrepreneurial finance columnist for Forbes.com and Rediff.com. He is also a consultant to federal and local governments, corporations, and area developers in venture-based development; and to businesses and ventures on their business and financial strategies. He has written business reference books including Business Financing: 25 Keys to Raising Money (New York Times Pocket MBA Series, N.Y.) and the Handbook of Business Finance & Capital Sources (American Management Association, N.Y.). In addition to two engineering degrees, Rao has a doctorate in business administration from the University of Minnesota.
