Global enrichment program provides Carlson School student with hands-on view of Argentina’s economy
Lauren McGowan knew when she started at the Carlson School that she wanted to study abroad. “The only thing I didn’t know,” says Lauren, “was where I wanted to go.” A junior at the Carlson School, McGowan is majoring in accounting and minoring in Spanish. She elected to take Accounting 3001 with a global enrichment program in Argentina. “After studying in Spain my sophomore year, I was interested in going to another Spanish-speaking country. I was able to do that—and meet a required course for my major.”
While in Argentina, the class met with businesses and financial institutions to learn first-hand about cost-based accounting, “The economy in Argentina is a fascinating study on recession.” says McGowan, “We met with four or five different companies, as well as a representative from the National Bank of Argentina. By talking to businesses and a financial institution, it gave a more holistic view.”
Even with their busy site schedule, McGowan said the trip wasn’t all business. The class also enjoyed sightseeing on the weekends. “Some students are nervous about traveling abroad. I tell them short-term, global enrichment programs are a great option for first-timers.”
