I was lucky to have been accepted to the PhD program in the Carlson School. I knew the program had a good reputation when I applied. However, I didn’t know about some of the school’s most important strengths. First, the University of Minnesota provides top-notch training both within the Carlson School and outside of the school in related fields such as Economics, Psychology, and Neuroscience. Few universities have as much strength in these disciplines. Next, the Department of Marketing has incredible depth and breadth in research. This strength goes beyond pure numbers of faculty and productivity, though those figures are impressive enough. The Marketing Department has a mix of productive faculty in early, middle, and established parts of their careers. Each timeframe of the career provides unique insights from which the PhD students benefit. Finally, the Carlson School professors clearly value the PhD program. I have discussed research ideas with the majority of the professors in the Department of Marketing. I was never turned down with a request to discuss papers or presentations. This openness with time and knowledge played a significant role in my ability to develop a program of research and ultimately to get an academic position.
I also really enjoyed living in the Twin Cities. Yes, the winters are cold, but the rest of the seasons are incredible. The Twin Cities have a number of great neighborhood restaurants and there is no shortage of interesting and affordable things to do. When you aren’t at the University, you’ll appreciate having such a nice place to live.
