Career Directions for Students Concentrating in E-Business Career Directions

Students who participate in this concentration will be able to pursue a number of kinds of positions, depending upon their selection of a second concentration area (either primary or secondary). However, it is critical that the student recognizes at the outset of his or her program that the job market for E-Business is a nontraditional one. As the electronic business marketplace expands, we expect that there will be significant demand among DotCom firms for our graduates in this. However, this probably is not where the bulk of the demand will come from. A large percentage of the recruiters will be traditional and large firms that are moving forward rapidly to establish their business on the new channel of the Internet and the national and global IS and business process-focused consulting firms. To be the most effective in the job market, we encourage Full-Time MBA students to obtain a relevant internship during the summer of Year 1 in the program. The internship should provide a blend of experience with e-business-related issues, knowledge of a specific functional area (e.g., Finance, Operations, IS, Marketing, etc.), and significant exposure to the new technologies that are used in electronic commerce.

Position Targets

Students who concentrate in E-Business at CSOM will be prepared to pursue a range of traditional positions, as well as new kinds of positions that relate more closely to electronic commerce on the Internet. The emphases of the positions that will be available are on e-business-focused and e-technology-focused skills, and they require the E-Business Concentration to be taken in parallel with other concentrations (e.g., Information Systems, Marketing, Management, Finance and Operations).
