Mass Mailings

Many job seekers prepare and distribute a qualifications package to a large number of potential employers. The package usually contains a cover letter and resume. The objective is to reach as many potential employers as possible while piquing employer curiosity and interest in your qualifications. Your goal is to get the potential employer to ask you for more information.

Pros:

  • Potential to generate a large number of interviews with a minimum amount of work
  • Targets a broader market

Cons:

  • Low rate of return (3% interview rate)
  • Nonspecific
  • Lacks sincerity

Hints:

DO:
Individually focused letters and targeted resumes will increase your chances that the receiver will respond. Address your letters to a specific person and insure everything is professional in appearance. Always follow up on all letters sent!
