Research Statement
My research is in the areas of quality management, operations strategy, and high-performance manufacturing. I have published papers on the measurement of quality management practices and their relationship to performance in various contexts, such as manufacturing, services, and school settings. I have also published on the process and content of operations strategy, including literature reviews, distinctive competence, and the relationship of operations strategy to performance. The "High-Performance Manufacturing" project is an ongoing data collection project now in its third round with data from over 280 plants in eight countries. I have published a variety of papers from this data set over the past 15 years on the subjects of quality, JIT, new product development, operations strategy, and performance.

    Instruction

    Teaching Philosophy
    My goal is to make learning about operations management fun and interesting, especially if students are not operations majors. I use extensive discussions in class and minimize lectures so that learning can be absorbed, not merely recited. I also make extensive use of cases, as this helps students understand the practical aspects of operations management in the real world.
