The Carlson School Full-Time MBA program was ranked 21st in the nation by U.S. News and World Report April 2, moving up five places from last year’s ranking at 26. This is the highest position our Full-Time MBA program has ever received, and it places us as tied for sixth place among public business schools. Several other academic programs also earned national rankings: information systems (4), management (21), operations (22), and marketing (22). Our Part-Time MBA and Executive MBA programs continue to be nationally ranked as well; the Part-Time MBA program was ranked 11th (down one position from last year), and the Executive MBA as ranked 21st (from 16th last year). We continue to work to keep all our programs among the best.

On March 31, the school offered its first-ever Carlson MBA Elective Fest for full-time and part-time MBA students. MBA students planning their academic courses were able to talk one-on-one with faculty members about electives offered in Fall 2004 and get detailed information on so they could choose the best fit for them. A large number of faculty and students participated. (At right, students preview fall courses and chat with professors about electives.)

The Next Step in the Carlson School Website Evolution
Work is underway on the Carlson School website evolution. As a powerful marketing tool, the school’s website is a central source of information and a key point of contact for many of our most important external audiences: prospective students, potential faculty, and the business community.
The goal of the website evolution is to maximize the site’s effectiveness as a marketing tool. The evolution will bring the site in line with the Carlson School’s new brand and visual identity standards and create consistency in navigation, voice, and content. It will also create a clearer, more streamlined way for contributing content for the website. An up-to-date site will help the Carlson School attract more prospective students and claim a distinctive position in the educational and business community.
Marketing Services is working with the Office of Information Technology, Gage Marketing, and the Website Council to plan and implement the changes by the beginning of the fall recruiting season. The website council is made up of website users, contributors, and department representatives from around the school. The groups will work to update the site’s architecture, content, and “look and feel” to fall in line with the Carlson School’s goals and brand standards.
The first iteration of changes are scheduled to appear by the end of August 2004. Look for more about the website evolution in the coming months.
E-mail Policy Change
Starting today, April 7, the all-faculty, all-staff, and all-PhD e-mail groups will no longer be available to most Lotus Notes users. This change will establish an e-mail policy at the Carlson School that is similar to those used in most large businesses, organizations, and other colleges on campus. Most importantly, it will help eliminate e-mail abuse and spam and will help make e-mail communications more effective.
Deans and directors will have access to these large group lists for sending school-related communication that will impact the majority of people on the group e-mail.
Additionally, group e-mail lists will no longer be managed by the Office of Information Technology (OIT), but instead by area and department administrators, who have already been alerted of this change. The new school faculty lists will be maintained by Catherine Bjerkebek, the all-staff list by Kenyatta Carter, the all-School PhD list by Earlene Bronson. Because these large lists have been recently updated, please notify the appropriate list manager if you know of someone not receiving school-wide announcements (such as Inside Carlson, the recent Herb Hanson gift announcement, and the U.S. News & World Report rankings announcement.) Also, OIT will continue to maintain student class group lists for faculty and staff use.
Please consider the following methods for communicating your announcements.

Carlson at the Capitol
On March 4, Carlson School faculty, staff, and students participated in “Carlson School Day at the Capitol,” an event-filled week that included a school-wide information session, a calling night to alumni, and direct e-mails to legislators urging their support for the school’s request of $1.7 million in planning money for a new undergraduate facility.
Dean Larry Benveniste and Undergraduate Programs Director Mary Maus Kosir, students Britta Anderson and Shannon Peloquin, and prospective student Nolan Soltvedt testified before the Senate’s Higher Education Committee regarding the Carlson School’s request.
After the testimony, the Student Legislative Action Partnership (SLAP) delivered petitions to the offices of the governor, senate majority leader, and the speaker of the house. Students, staff, and faculty also met personally with legislators and were able to watch the members of the House in session.
The following week, Dean Benveniste and Jim Campbell, Chairman of the Carlson School’s Board of Overseers, met privately with Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson and House Speaker Steve Sviggum to request their support for the new facility.
Addressing Recruiting Challenges In Colombia
by Alex Bucheli
During winter break, I headed back home to Colombia. It is one of the countries in South America that was not visited by the Carlson School as part of its recruiting tour. With the help of the Full-Time MBA office, I had the opportunity to plan an information session about our school for experienced professionals who are interested in pursuing an MBA in the United States.
The idea for this event came up about two months before winter break. During that time, I contacted the alumni relations department at two of the top universities in Colombia to inquire about setting up an information session. The response was better than I anticipated. More than 25 people reserved a spot for my info session and several more requested a brochure and made general inquiries. I was also able to interview some candidates who were interested in applying to the Carlson School this fall.
Findings from Stephen Parente, Jon Christianson, and Roger Feldman’s research project “Consumer Driven Health Care” can now be viewed at: www.ehealthplan.org. Their work was also cited in the March 15 Star Tribune article “Building a Revolution.” For more information on this project, see the Fall 2003 issue of Centerline, available on the Center for the Study of Healthcare Management website.
Theresa Glomb(at right) and Brian McCall, Human Resources and Industrial Relations, head up the research team conducting the University of Minnesota’s PULSE survey. The University has partnered with the Human Resources Research Institute to conduct the project. The survey, which will be an ongoing university-wide effort to “take the pulse” of University employees, asks a variety of questions about employees’ experiences and attitudes about their jobs, departments, and the University. So far, over 5,000 employees have responded to the survey. In the years to come, the University plans to administer similar surveys to track changes in University employees’ experiences.
