Career fairtips for students

Here are some hints and tips on how to prepare, what to do, and how to react before, during, and after the career fair!

  • Obtain a list of the companies attending.
  • Learn more about companies that interest you.
  • Know your qualifications so you can show them off!
  • Anticipate interview-type questions and practice answers.
  • Prepare questions you want employers to answer.
  • Bring multiple copies of your resume and an appointment book in case you need to set up an informational interview.
  • Dress for success! This is your chance to stand out among other students – so take advantage of it!
  • Walk the fair by yourself. Be independent and don’t travel with friends.
  • Approach recruiters - but don’t jump into a conversation the recruiter is having with another student.
  • Greet the recruiter with a firm handshake and maintain eye contact.
  • Communicate your interest by expressing your knowledge of the organization.
  • Take time to market yourself. Don’t simply throw your resume on the table because it will probably be end up in a pile with other resumes.
  • Relax and speak slowly with confidence.
  • Listen and ask relevant questions – this is not the time to ask salary related questions.
  • Relate your experiences and interests to the needs of the employer.
  • Take notes!
  • Get appropriate contact information and ask for a business card.
  • Ask what the next step is if you are interested.
  • Send a thank you card and reconfirm your interest.
