InternationalStudents

The Carlson School welcomes applicants from all over the world. In fact, international students make up about 30% of each Full-Time MBA class and represent a wide variety of countries. Each fall, we travel to a number of international cities to meet with prospective students. If you’re interested in learning more about the program, we encourage you to schedule an interview. When you're ready to apply, please note that deadlines are earlier for international candidates, so it's important to allow time to assemble your materials. We look forward to receiving your application.

Basic Academic Requirements
Before submitting an application, please make sure you meet the academic requirements for pursuing a Carlson MBA:

• Bachelor's degree, in any major, from a regionally accredited college or university

• GMAT results (preferably within the last 5 years) (Carlson code: D2N-VJ-15)

• If English is not your first language, you must submit scores from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. We accept results from either exam, so it's not necessary to take both. Scores must be less than 2 years old when you apply.

International Credentials
In general, first degrees requiring less than 4 years of education are not considered equivalent to a US bachelor's degree, and holders of these degrees must complete an additional higher degree to be considered for admission. Requirements differ by country.

If you have attended universities that issue official transcripts of records upon request, you must submit credentials. Attested true copies of such records are not accepted. Applicants from universities in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and France, and from universities outside of North America on the French system, may submit certified or attested mark sheets or examination reports that detail results of all exams. These credentials may be certified by university personnel or government officials; they should bear the original signature of the certifying official. You may not certify your own credentials.

Applicants from the former USSR and Europe should submit official English translations in addition to credentials in the original language. Applicants from the People's Republic of China must submit transcripts and degree award statements in both English and Chinese; both versions must be official.

If credentials do not show the university grading system, you must also submit a separate official statement from the university with this information. If credentials do not record the awarding of the degree, you should submit certified true copies of your diplomas.

In addition, as an international student, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds available to meet all educational expenses for the duration of your stay at the University of Minnesota. This includes funds to cover tuition, fees, room and board, transportation, and other expenses. If the program grants admission, it will send you a Financial Certification Statement with the admission letter. This form must be returned showing sufficient funds before immigration documents will be issued. The University issues I-20s after approving the application and receiving financial support verification.

Visas
International students must hold an F-1 student visa to pursue Full-Time MBA study at the University of Minnesota, unless their funding source requires them to hold a J-1 exchange/visitor visa. Holders of other visa types will be required to change their visa status to F-1 or J-1 in order to be registered in the Full-Time MBA program.

The University of Minnesota will issue the required I-20 form to apply for an F-1 visa only after candidates have been admitted to a degree program, and only upon receipt of certification of the availability of funding to support a student's first 12 months of study. At the time of admission, we will send international candidates an International Student Financial Certification Statement that must be completed and returned in order to receive an I-20 form.

Currently, students must certify they have a minimum of $54,000 in order to receive an I-20 form from the University of Minnesota. Additional financial resources are required if students wish to have spouses and/or children accompany them to the US.
