Tomato Can Loving Cup Award Winner Carlson School graduate Parker Schultz honored with prestigious leadership award
MINNEAPOLIS (May 28, 2008) —Parker Schultz, a native of Audubon, Iowa, became the 79th recipient of the Carlson School of Management’s Tomato Can Loving Cup, the school’s oldest and most prestigious award for undergraduate service and leadership. In keeping with the tradition of the Tomato Can Loving Cup Award, the winner was announced at the school’s commencement ceremony on May 19.
Schultz’s name will be engraved on the award, which is an actual tomato can. The Tomato Can Loving Cup dates back to the Great Depression, when the business school’s students developed the award to recognize an outstanding senior. Decades later, the honor is still given to the student who performs the most distinctive service to the Carlson School. However, today it also comes with a full-tuition scholarship to the Carlson School’s MBA program after the recipient has gained two years of work experience.
“Parker Schultz exemplifies the character of this award,” says Mary Maus Kosir, assistant dean of the Carlson School’s Undergraduate program. “Throughout his college career, he has been an example of professionalism and leadership. Faculty, staff and students recognize him as a person of high integrity, dedication and resourcefulness.”
Schultz graduated from the Carlson School in May with a bachelor’s degree in management information systems and finance. In addition to maintaining a grade point average of 3.8,
he has actively supported the Carlson School and the University of Minnesota through hundereds of hours of volunteer service. During his four years on campus, he served as: the Carlson School Undergraduate Business Board president; a Carlson School Honors Association Board member; an Emerging Leaders Honor’s Conference Planning Committee member; a Carlson School Undergraduate Student Advisory Board member; University of Minnesota Strategic Positioning Committee Student Task Force member; and University of Minnesota Student Senate Information Technologies Committee member.
Schultz is the recipient of several awards, including the 2008 Carlson School of Management Student of the Year Award and the 2008 University of Minnesota President’s Student Leadership and Service Award. He completed internships at Accenture, General Mills and Thermo King Corporation; studied at the University of Manchester in England; and was one of eight undergraduate students selected to participate in the Carlson Consulting Enterprise during his junior and senior years. He will begin a full-time position with Accenture later this summer.
“The most defining part of my fours years at the University of Minnesota has been the opportunity to distinctively give back through activities that will continue to generate benefits in the university community long after I graduate,” says Schultz. “I believe that my work on various task forces and boards will have a lasting impacting on current and future students, especially in the areas of support services and student life at the Carlson School.”
