Hockey Legend Lou Nanne Receives University of Minnesota Outstanding Achievement Award

MINNEAPOLIS (October 27, 2008) – The University of Minnesota recently presented hockey great, entrepreneur and volunteer Lou Nanne with its highest and most prestigious non-degree honor for alumni – the Outstanding Achievement Award. The award recognizes graduates of the University of Minnesota who have attained unusual distinction in their profession or in public service and who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and leadership on a community, state, national or international level. Only a few dozen alumni receive this award each year.

Lou Nanne, a legend in Minnesota sports and business, exemplifies an outstanding University of Minnesota alumnus. Following a successful hockey career with the Golden Gophers, Nanne received his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1963. He later played for the Minnesota North Stars and, after retiring as a professional player, climbed the ranks of the organization’s management to serve as its general manager and president. In 1995, he joined Voyageurs Asset Management, which is headquartered in Minneapolis. He helped build the organization’s institutional sales business, and presently serves as senior managing director and national sales manager.

Today, Nanne continues his life as a highly active community volunteer, serving as a mentor at the University’s Carlson School of Management, assisting in the development of youth hockey and giving his time to the United Way and the Children’s Cancer Society. He has held honorary chairs with the Children’s Home Society and Boys and Girls Clubs, served on the board of Minneapolis Community College and volunteered with Camp Confidence.

Lou was named among the top 50 college hockey players of the past 50 years and he has been inducted into the University of Minnesota Hall of Fame, the U. S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the International Ice Hockey Hall of Fame. He has also been a generous philanthropist, establishing the Louis V. Nanne Endowed Scholarship to support the men’s hockey team. He contributed to the book, “Minnesota North Stars: History and Memories with Lou Nanne,” written by Bob Showers and published by Beaver’s Pond Press in October 2007.

The Carlson School of Management presented Nanne with the award in conjunction with Intercollegiate Athletics.
