Marilyn Carlson Nelson receives University of Minnesota Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree

The University of Minnesota recently presented Marilyn Carlson Nelson with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree at the Carlson School of Management, in recognition of her public service contributions. Carlson Nelson is a business leader, volunteer, author, and philanthropist. The Honorary Degree is the highest award conferred by the University of Minnesota and recognizes eminence in public service.

Marilyn Carlson Nelson is chairman and former CEO of Carlson, one of the largest privately held companies in the world. Carlson Nelson has been named one of “America's Best Leaders” by U.S. News & World Report and Forbes magazine regularly selected her as one of "The World's 100 Most Powerful Women." In 2007, Ethisphere Magazine named her one of the "100 Most Influential People in Business Ethics." An authority on authentic leadership, Carlson Nelson is the author of the book, How We Lead Matters: Reflections on a Life of Leadership.

Carlson Nelson co-chaired the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in 2004 and has received prestigious awards from the governments of France, Sweden and Finland. She serves on the boards of Exxon Mobil, The Committee Encouraging Philanthropy, The Foreign Policy Association and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She served as chair of the National Women’s Business Council, a bi-partisan advisory council to the President and Congress (2002/2005), and is currently chair of the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board.

At the University of Minnesota, Carlson Nelson has served on the Carlson School’s Board of Overseers and the University of Minnesota Foundation’s Board of Trustees since 1999; is a frequent guest lecturer, panelist, and keynote speaker; hosts a signature series on Twin Cities Public Television called “Inside the Boardroom”; and was an important force in establishing the University’s Center for Integrative Leadership.
