A breakfast, a putt-putt golf game, and a Halloween party rounded out the month of events designed to bring the Carlson School to a record level of generosity. The final results will be available soon.

Summit participants will be asked to reflect on dimensions identified by the Office of Learning Excellence steering committee prior to the summit and on January 28 will participate in various activities leading to the drafting of the statement.

Growing Up in a Material World
On November 4, at 4:00 p.m. in 2-260R, Professor Deborah Roedder John will speak on “Growing up in a Material World,” the third lecture in the Carlson School Research Lecture Series. Materialism is a topic of increasing concern among parents, educators, and consumer advocates. In recent surveys, nearly 90 percent of adults say that children are “too focused on buying and consuming things” and 87 percent of parents believe that marketing is responsible for rising levels of materialism among children.
For the last ten years, Professor John’s work has examined how children and adolescents acquire consumer knowledge and beliefs as they grow up in a material world. This work has shown that children learn about the value of material possessions, learn about brands, and develop relationships with brands as they grow older — especially between middle childhood and early adolescence. John will describe how children grow into their roles as consumers with particular emphasis on stages of development. She will also discuss how these patterns of development relate to the adoption of materialistic values in children and adolescents.
Professor Deborah Roedder John holds the Curtis L. Carlson Chair in Marketing at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. She received her Ph.D. in Marketing from Northwestern University and is an expert in consumer behavior, specializing in children’s consumer behavior and consumer brand management. She is one of the most cited authors in children’s consumer behavior in the world, with her work appearing in top marketing journals as well as publications such as the New York Times and BusinessWeek.
Inside the Boardroom: Alvarado Construction President and CEO to Speak at the Carlson School of Management
Linda Alvarado, President and CEO Alvarado Construction and host Marilyn Carlson Nelson , Carlson Companies Chairman and CEO, will discuss Alvarado’s rise to the top of one of the nation’s largest Hispanic-owned businesses at 6 p.m. Monday, November 8, at the Carlson School of Management “Inside the Boardroom” Leadership Series event.
Alvarado and Nelson will conduct a public conversation on Alvarado’s personal and professional successes and struggles. They will then be joined by a group of experts to discuss a range of business issues.
Linda Alvarado has moved from modest beginnings to seats on such FORTUNE boards as 3M, Lennox International, the Pepsi Bottling Group, Pitney Bowes, and Qwest. Starting a business in 1976 with a $2,500 loan from her parents, Alvarado now leads one of the fastest growing commercial general contracting firms in the country. Her Denver-based company has completed such high-profile projects as Invesco Field at Mile High, Denver International Airport, and the Colorado Convention Center.
A pioneer on several fronts, Alvarado made history in 1991 when she became the first Hispanic co-owner of a major-league baseball franchise, the Colorado Rockies. This also marked the first time a woman was involved in an ownership bid. She is a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award and the prestigious Sara Lee Frontrunner Award, a member of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and has been named one of the “100 Most Influential Hispanics in America” by Hispanic Business Magazine . Alvarado also served on President Clinton’s Advisory Commission of Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.
The bi-annual “Inside the Boardroom” series, developed and hosted by Marilyn Carlson Nelson, showcases American CEOs considered to be the leaders in their field. The series is sponsored by the Carlson School’s chapter of Graduate Women in Business.
