An Undergraduate Women in Business group will debut during the spring semester. Meetings will be held on Mondays, noon–1:00 p.m. Each week, speakers will talk about a variety of issues such as pay gaps, the glass ceiling, communication differences, and many other issues that effect women in the corporate world. The president’s award for outstanding service recognizes exceptional service to the University, its schools, colleges, departments, and service units by any active or retired member of the faculty or staff. Such service must have gone well beyond the regular duties of a faculty or a staff member, and demonstrate unusual commitment to the University community. This award is presented each spring to honor active or retired faculty or staff members who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community. The Council of Academic Professionals and Administrators and the University Senate Committee on Committees are seeking P&A employees interested in serving on a number of University senate committees beginning next academic year. Serving on these committees is an opportunity to meet faculty and staff from across the University and have a voice in considering important academic issues. No other financial services office/Carlson School payment request forms can be used. This form must be used for all employee related reimbursements (travel and misc. expense reimbursements). Faculty News
Brian McCall (at right), Dennis Ahlburg, and Steve DesJardines (Michigan) were awarded a $550,000 research grant by the Lumina Foundation to study the transition from high school to college to the labor market.
On January 1, 2005 Dennis Ahlburg (at left) along with Co-PI's from the Minnesota Population Center, began to collect and harmonize 150 census microdata sets from 1960–2000, for 44 countries, with a recently awarded $5 million National Science Foundation grant.
Paul Johnson is a member of a research team that was awarded a four year grant from the National Institutes of Health in the amount of $2,450,000 to study the problem of clinical inertia in the delivery of healthcare to patients with chronic diseases.
The Juran Center will fund up to three faculty proposalsfor research beginning next summer. The grants are intended to be seed money. Proposals will be funded up to a maximum of $10,000 each and should lead to large grant funding from sources such as the National Science Foundation, other foundations or corporations. The research topics proposed should address issues concerning the achievement and sustainability of customer preference or process excellence in organizations. Faculty interested in a seed grant must apply by Wednesday, January 19. Awards will be announced in April. Performance Review Information
Performance review time for the review year of 2004 is approaching! Performance reviews will occur in late January for the 2004 calendar year. The performance review improvement committee has made exciting revisions to the existing University of Minnesota review forms. The updates include:
Action planning Under each major job function, there is now a space for future action planning.
Performance ratings Based on employee and supervisor feedback, the revised form has the three performance levels: exceeds expectations, meets expectations, and needs improvement.
Employee input form The revised employee input form gives you the opportunity to provide your supervisor with input regarding your professional development goals as well as your perspective on performance on your major job functions.

Steve Searl recently joined the Development Department. Steve has great experience in relationship-building, including 21 years as an investment executive, most recently with Feltl and Company. During his career, he developed his business identifying qualified prospects, initiating contacts, developing and nurturing relationships, and helping with their financial investments. International Programs welcomed Wendy Witherspoon on November 22 as the new global enrichment electives seminar coordinator. Wendy has just received a master's degree in educational leadership and has studied abroad in Spain, Scotland, China, and Australia. Wendy can be reached at 6-4814.
Virginia (Ginny) Steele is the new assistant director for public programs in the Executive Development Center. Ginny will be responsible for managing the Executive Development Center’s public program portfolio. She will work with Marketing Services to develop the public and custom programs' marketing strategy and manage the electronic marketing initiatives and webpage. Previously Ginny worked as Director of Marketing with AGS Publishing. Ginny can be reached at 4-7825.
Morgan Kinross-Wright is the new director of the Undergraduate Business Career Center. Morgan comes from Carlson School's Corporate Relations, where she has spent the past two years working as Associate Director. She brings to the position a wealth of education within the private and public sector, along with an MBA from the University of Michigan and an MS in counseling from Minnesota State University. Morgan will begin her position January 18.
David Dudley joined the ExecutiveDevelopmentCenter as the account manager on December 6, 2004. He is responsible for selling seats in the Executive Development Center's open enrollment programs. Dave was formally a representative in the customer interaction center for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. He can reached at 4-3821.
