The Carlson School dean search committee asks for your help in identifying and nominating candidates for the next dean of the Carlson School of Management. Provost Sullivan has outlined an aggressive pace for this search and the committee will meet weekly to diligently work on the selection of a permanent dean. Thus, we appreciate receiving your recommendations and nominations by Wednesday, March 9.
The committee seeks serious nominations of those with demonstrated ability or high potential to immediately succeed in this leadership position. Please use the attached position description as a guide in considering nominees for our deanship. Among other alternatives, exemplary nominees may include seasoned deans, associate deans, and department heads from top business schools as well as internal candidates who excel at the requisite qualifications. We also encourage the nomination of individuals with academic backgrounds who may have a less traditional career track and those from under-represented communities.
The executive search firm of Baker Parker will actively assist the committee in confidentially screening nominations, making initial contact, and cultivating applications, as appropriate. The search committee met with firm partner Jerry Baker and determined a standard operating procedure for appraising and cultivating the pool. However, we all recognize that the most robust pool will likely result from your direct involvement in the nomination process. We strongly encourage you to submit nominations and suggestions to us via Leanne Wirkkula, staff to the committee. Call her at 5–0563, or click here to email her.
We appreciate your thoughtful and expedient contributions to this search. For general information on the search, click here. Also, please do not hesitate to contact either of us to discuss suggestions or concerns as the search progresses.
Thank you,

And congratulations to Full-Time MBA students Andy Johnson, Juan Gaviria, Rafael Bottaro-Carve, Anne Soash, Matt Headman, and Ryan Horton placed second in the International Graduate Logistics Case Competition in Chicago on Saturday, February 19. They took home a prize of $1,000.
The newly elected MBA Association leadership includes: Dana Kelly Brever, President; Roy Bodayla, Vice-President; Jennifer Rusk, Secretary; Jorge Samper-Zelaya, Treasurer.
Alfred Marcus credits MBA students in his strategic management classes with assisting him in the research for his forthcoming book, Under the Radar (Prentice Hall, 2005). He writes, “MBA students in my strategic management classes at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management assisted in the research done for this book. They wrote papers about pairs of assigned companies that achieved sustained competitive advantage and disadvantage. They tried to explain the reasons for company success and failure. The students presented their results in class and we discussed what they found. The assignment I gave them is reproduced below. The insights in this book derive from their work. They pointed me in certain directions, but I take full responsibility for where I ended up. The conclusions in this book are my own. The names of the students and the companies they analyzed are listed in the acknowledgements at the end of the book."
