Part-Time MBAProfessional Portfolios

Carlson Part-Time MBA students get more than a world-class education. They earn a combination of skills, experiences, and accomplishments that provide a competitive edge and help them achieve specific career goals.

The Carlson School developed professional portfolios to help students choose courses and professional activities -- to help them design a total MBA experience -- that aligns with their individual career path. It's a new way of thinking about business education.

Every Part-Time MBA student starts by taking core classes that develop the strongest possible knowledge base. Portfolios build upon the core courses by helping students choose from a wide selection of electives and activities that build a solid functional expertise in a particular area.

Professional portfolios are advising tools that help you choose courses, professional associations, mentorship programs, training, international experiences, extra and co-curricular activities, and community service activities that address weaknesses or gaps in your individual portfolio and distinguish you from others. These tools can also help you develop strategic thinking, leadership, communication, and team building skills.

To help students develop an individualized portfolio, we ask them to think about their career goals and consider how their experiences have prepared them for the future:

Building Your Portfolio

The Portfolios

We've organized classes and accompanying experiences, such as participation in professional organizations and student groups, into five professional portfolios:

Marketing
Finance
Consulting
Supply Chain & Operations
Information Systems & Technology

Portfolios are flexible and can also guide students with interests outside these fields. After students complete the core courses, they can select courses from more than one portfolio and are always free to take any MBA elective that will best suit their plans for the future.
