The "Syllabus and Content" Smartlink in WebVista
The "Syllabus and Content" item is a WebCT smartlink that Carlson classes use. This WebCT smartlink will bring you to your student-view of content that your instructors prepare using Carlson's Learning Management System interface.
The "Syllabus and Content" smartlink contains most of your course content, such as your course Syllabus, Word documents, PPT files and other course information. It is your main navigation area for course content. If your instructor has released their Carlson LMS content to your student view in WebVista, you will see the below described areas. (view an example). If you get a not available message, see the Tips and Issues at right.

Syllabus - (not all areas may appear, depending on if your instructor has input content)
- Faculty Information - Your instructor will often describe his/her contact information and brief academic and professional background information in this area. You may often find Teaching Assistant content information in this area, too.
- Course Description – This area often describes the classroom activity and study materials that students will be use and is often describe in broad, qualitative language.
- Section Goals – Section Goals describe the purpose of the course, e.g. skills and concepts which students will gain by participating successfully in the course.
- Grading Distribution – This area is variable and contains structural information about grading and assessments. In this area you may find information about group projects, reports you may write for the class, percentages of course activities tied to assessments (e.g. 20% quizzes, 30% reports), and/or individual assignments and their due dates (e.g. Paper #1 due March 1, etc.). This area is a broad area for instructors to provide an overarching description of how you will be assessed in the course and requirements of you as a student participating in the course.
- Policies – In this area you will find do’s and don’ts for the students in the course, e.g. Academic Misconduct and information for students with disabilities. In addition, you may find individual instructor policies, e.g. policies regarding using cellphones in class and other course policies.
- Course Schedule - In this area, your instructor may input the overall course schedule, e.g. class days, class topics, when major assignments are due, etc.
Announcements - Your instructor may place announcements here and optionally email them to you. This area is the first area you will see when you click the "Syllabus and Content" smartlink
Classmates - In this area you will see the names and emails of your classmates in your course section.
Course Schedule – This area pulls from the "Course Schedule" area within the "Syllabus" area above. It is pulled out here as a convenience to you in having that overall Course Schedule available without having to navigate within the Syllabus throughout the course.
Sessions - This is where your course has attachments (e.g. , ) and descriptions of learning activities. Depending on your instructor;s preference, the sessions may be titled according to your class meeting times (e.g. Feb 12, Feb 19), or organized according to course topics (Database Marketing, Team Strategies). This area is variable. You may find that some items are time/dated and you will often find text descriptions of uploaded files.
Additional Resources - Your instructor may type information here that is relevant to the course, but may not necessarily be required, e.g., upcoming conferences, newspaper articles, etc. |
