How to send emails without Carlson LMS

The Carlson LMS "Student Roster" link provides you with:

  • Student name
  • Student email (x.500 email)
  • Student picture
  • Student Profile
  • Total student count *
  • Names of students on the waiting list

Things you can do here:

EMAIL

Emails send from LMS go to UMN Email accounts. To send an email, select whom you wish to email:

  • ENTIRE CLASS --- At the top of the page select the checkbox to "Select All."
  • SECTION --- This option only occurs if there are multiple Sections merged into one LMS/WebVista section. If you have a merged course (e.g., two sections of a class that are joined together), you have the option to send emails to the entire course group or sections individually.
  • INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS --- Checkmark checkboxes for single or multiple students.
Clicking the Email Selected hyperlink will open an email editing window.
Note: If you are emailing the entire class, students appear on the BCC: line. This is by design so if a student responds "reply" or "reply to all" the message still only goes directly back to you does not email-the-class.
Type your email message in the "message" field.
We recommend composing your message in Word and copy/pasting your resulting full text because the system does not have an auto-save feature.
You may add ONE attachment.

After composing your email, click the "send" button. The person logged in will receive an automatic cc of the email. Emails sent from Carlson LMS automatically have the course ID and section number appended to whatever text he/she put into the Subject line of the email from LMS. (see below)

ACCT 3001: Preparing for Tuesday

Emails sent with Carlson LMS are as plain-text. This is for two main reasons: 1) not all students subscribe to HTML email clients (and if students do not use HTML email, they would not see your yellow-highlighted words, etc., and we want to ensure equally transparent communication) and 2) the university web-mail client that all students must monitor is a text-only client. Some suggestions for emphases in text-only communication is to use hard-returns and captive letters - headings for your topics or in your communication content.

Carlson LMS Student Roster

To PRINT the section roster, select the Print Roster link at the top of the Roster window. The resulting page will stack the students pictures and names in a 4-column view for ease of printing.

To DOWNLOAD the student roster, click the "Download Roster" link. Bear in mind that the Roster is for faculty-use-only. Students do not see pictures of other students in their view.

Notes:

  • The total student count is provided for you in the top-right of the Roster.
  • If your course is a merged class, the total count will be subtotaled for each section so you can see how many students are in each section as compared to the overall course.
