Options for Creating Off-Campus Access
to UMN Library Materials for Courses
Persistent links to articles from magazines, journals, and newspapers can be created from the tools and databases at the University Libraries. Persistent links are sometimes also called deeplinks.
Creating deeplinks to library materials is like creating a hyperlink to the stored copyrighted item at UMN libraries without having to keep a copy of the item on your harddrive or your class site. In many causes the databases and e-journals licensed by the University Libraries permit fair use deeplinking to copyrighted articles. The only publication that is restrictive to deeplinking to articles (if used in a course assignment) is the Harvard Business Review. http://www.lib.umn.edu/copyright/
Creating off-campus deeplinks to online UMN library materials
Do it Yourself ...
Google Scholar
Easiest. Works with most online journal articles. See PDF at bottom.
UMN Libraries Citation Linker
Works with all materials but more difficult to generate links. For some materials (e.g. some newspaper articles like Wall Street Journal, this may be the only way.) See PDF at bottom.

E-Reserves Site
This is like an electronic course packet instead of a printed one. UMN library staff work to create the deeplinks to electronic materials and can scan hardcopies of printed-materials to make them electronically available. Instructors give students the URL and password. Read more at http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/reserves.phtml
Contact a Librarian
Business Librarians at Wilson Library help instructors create these links and will collaborate on designing and evaluating assignments. Contact information for Business Librarians at Wilson Library. Read more at http://courses.lib.umn.edu/page.phtml
