What factors are considered for admission?

Transfer admission is competitive and is based on an overall assessment of the applicant's background and accomplishments as presented in the application materials. Transfer applicants must have completed at least 30 semester credits and each of the following tool courses: calculus, microeconomics and macroeconomics. Students who have completed less then one academic year of college by the application deadline must also submit a high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores to be included in the review. Students who are applying at the junior level should also complete business statistics and financial accounting prior to transfer in order to remain on a 4-year graduation plan. Academic performance is assesed on factors such as: overall grade point average and rigor of curriculum: progress in the tool courses, grade trends and completion patterns. In addition to very strong academic records, applicants should have stong leadership, service and/or work experience. The application addendum, which must be completed in addition to the application, provides the basis for assessing an applicant's accomplishments outside the classroom.

I understand that there are several changes with the Carlson School curriculum starting Fall 2008. What are these changes?

Four signature experiences will be introduced to students entering the program in fall 2008, including an introductory management course, an immersion core during the second year, an international experience, and a capstone experience at the end of the major.

In addition, a new major in Nonprofit Management was approved by the Regents in July 2007 and is available to students starting in fall 2007. The major, offered in conjunction with the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs was established to meet growing demand in the nonprofit sector of Minnesota.

Will transfer students be held to these requirements?

Yes, they will, with a few exceptions: Students who transfer in at the junior level will not take the new freshmen level management course, but will be held to Mgmt 3001 Fundamentals of Management instead. Sophomore transfer students will take Mgmt 1001 Contemporary Management.
Major requirements are being reviewed by the departments during the 2007-2008 academic year, with changes to take effect in fall 2008. Details about the changes to the majors will be available during the later part of spring semester 2008.

What if I have completed one of the courses in the Immersion Core already?

Students are encouraged not to take any of the four I-Core courses prior to transfer. However, in the instance that you have, your advisor will work with you to identify alternative paths.

I work full time and can only take one to two classes each semester? Will I be able to complete the program as a part-time student?

The University of Minnesota has a 13 credit minimum policy. The I-Core is 12 credits. Students who are currently enrolled at the Carlson School of Management and have an approved part-time status will be accommodated on an individual basis and may be able to take non-Carlson School sections of the courses to meet the requirement. New students should plan to progress through the program as a full-time student and will be expected to complete the 12 credit I-Core.

I sent in my application for admission -- what’s next?

Applications are reviewed as a group, not on a first come, first served basis. You will receive a decision in the mail in April or May. Decisions are not available online or by phone.

Will my credits transfer?

The Carlson School's Undergraduate Program works with the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions to determine how credits transfer to meet program requirements. Use the transfer guide to determine how your credits will transfer to meet liberal education requirements and which courses will transfer to meet our specific tool course requirements. We generally review upper division, or major coursework, on a course-by-course basis.
