Application Process


All applicants to the MA and PhD programs must complete 2 application forms: an online University of Minnesota Graduate School application and a separate paper application for the HRIR program. We do not need to receive all application materials at the same time.


Prerequisite

Before enrolling, all students must complete an undergraduate course in microeconomics with a grade of C or better. You do not need to finish the prerequisite before applying to the program.

  1. Online Graduate School Application
  2. Application fee
  3. Official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions
    • Institutions must send official transcripts directly to the Graduate School, showing degree conferral 
    • International students must also provide official English translations
  4. TOEFL/IELTS scores for students whose native language is not English
    • Institution no. 6874; dept. no. 87
    • If you have taken 16 semester credits (or 24 quarter credits) from a US institution in the past 24 months, you do not need to take the TOEFL exam

HRIR Program Application

  1. HRIR Application (PDF)
  2. Copy of the online graduate school application including statement of objectives document
  3. Resume
  4. Three letters of recommendation
    • From professors, if possible; otherwise from employers
    • Please do not complete or submit online letters of recommendation from the Graduate School application   
  5. GRE scores (institution no. 6874; dept. no. 4204)
    • MA applicants can substitute GMAT scores (code 6799)
    • PhD applicants must submit GRE scores
  6. Copy of transcripts, in addition to transcripts provided to the Graduate School 
  7. Copy of TOEFL/IELTS scores (if applicable)

The HRIR application cannot be submitted online. Please send all materials to:
