The IRC Alumni Association Mentorship Program facilitates personal and professional development for both alumni and students through mentorship. The program provides graduate students (Mentees) with real-world exposure to the human resources field through the professional coaching of our IRC HRIR alumni and other human resources professionals in the community. The mentoring program offers Mentors the opportunity to enhance coaching, communication and relationship-building skills.
The Mentor 's role is to be available to communicate with their Mentee with the suggestion of having at least two interactions per month - in person, by email or by phone. There are no expectations that an internship or a job will result from the relationship, but that the Mentor be available for regular contact for areas related to HR professional development and navigating the world of work.
The Mentoring Committee sponsors events throughout the year and provides ongoing support for the program. Both Mentors and Mentees are strongly encouraged to attend the Kick Off/Training event on October 18 to meet your Mentor/Mentee match and begin your partnership. Also, Mentors are encouraged to invite Mentees to visit their workplace on Job Shadow Day in February.
HRIR alumni (or HR professionals) may choose their level of involvement from three categories. Those who are interested in a mentoring partnership may mentor either one or two students during the program year. Those who are not able to participate as Mentors may wish to act as resources for informational interviews. Please note: Alumni from outside the Twin Cities area are also encouraged to participate as Mentors.
Registration for the 2007-2008 Mentorship Program is closed. If you have questions regarding the program, please email hrmentor@umn.edu
