Designing Assignments and Activities that Help Students Learn Presenter: Jane O'Brien, Associate Director, Center for Teaching and Learning
Many of us are familiar with the shift in higher education from "teaching as telling" to "teaching for learning" but have questions about what this means for instructional design. What practical strategies can we use to help our students be better learners? How can we structure activities and assignments that are not only engaging but also foster critical thinking? How can instructors decide which active learning techniques best suit their teaching and learning goals? In this workshop we'll explore these issues and sample a variety of assignments that can foster higher order thinking skills. In addition, we'll discussclassroom assessment techniques that provide the feedback we need to see that learning is taking place. This workshop will be offered twice:

Active Learning Techniques - Classroom Assessment Techniques
This workshop is presented through the PACE program and will be led by Dr. Steve Huchendorf, of the OMS department.
The Active Learning & Classroom Assessment Techniques (ALT-CAT) Workshop is a program aimed at advancing classroom excellence by incorporating Active Learning Techniques (ALTs) and Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) into class sessions. Learning Styles and the Learning Cycle Roadmap will be the vehicles for improving class sessions. Applications will focus on CSOM courses for undergraduates at the Carlson School of Management. Workshop participants will work together in small groups to apply the techniques to their courses.

Time: 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Lunch will be served.
Designing Multiple Choice Questions for Assessing Student Learning Presenter: David Langley, Ph.D, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning
Many university instructors use multiple choice (MC) questions as a foundation for assessing student learning. While the format has been criticized on several fronts, well-structured questions can be designed that examine real-world situations or higher order thinking skills. The workshop focuses specifically on a) guidelines for constructing appropriate MC questions, b) providing a range of examples for tapping different levels of student knowledge, and c) outlining resources for analyzing MC questions and for building further knowledge.
Date: November 5, 2008
