Exchange studentclasses

At the Carlson School, we embrace the presence and perspective of international exchange students and give you opportunities to take challenging courses with world-class faculty. In addition to small student-to-teacher ratios and an emphasis on applied knowledge and practice, you'll have a chance to work with other students, applying case studies and theories to real business challenges.

The International Programs office will send you registration information before you arrive. We'll also help you choose classes that best suit your requirements.

Will classes I want be available?

When you arrive, some classes may already be closed. The International Programs office will try to hold a limited number of seats in certain classes to meet student interest. Most closed classes will have a waitlist. We cannot guarantee admittance and urge you to consider alternatives.

How many credits should I take?

All exchange students must register for a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 19. Most Carlson School students enroll for 14 - 16 credits per semester. Check with your home school regarding the number of credits you need to complete your exchange.

What level of courses should I choose?

You should review the registration guidelines for your home school. Generally, graduate and MBA students will select courses at the 6xxx level (8xxx for HRIR). Undergraduate students will select courses at the 3xxx, 4xxx, and 5xxx levels. Please note that undergraduates are not allowed in graduate courses. Also, graduate students who take undergraduate courses may have difficulty transferring the credits at home.  Note that all non-HRIR classes at the 8xxx level are for admitted doctoral students and not open to exchange students.

So, what should I do now?

Before you arrive, you will receive a course preference form. You need to review One Stop class schedules for your term of study and submit the form by the deadline. We encourage you to double-check your courses prior to submission to make sure the courses you list are open. We will work hard to meet your preferences when space is available.

When will my registration be confirmed?

All students will receive more information about registration and advising during the welcome program. After the semester begins, you can attend classes for one week before you must confirm your enrollment for the term. During this period, you can add and drop courses without extra fees. Some instructors do not allow students to join a course after the first week, so we recommend that you sit in on classes you are considering, even if you're not yet enrolled the section.
