Exchange studenthousing - frequently asked questions

As a Carlson School exchange student, you can choose from several different housing options in and around campus. Most students live in on-campus residences, but off-campus options are also available.

Where are my housing options?

Each semester, the International Programs office reserves a number of spaces in on-campus housing. Students can also apply to live in off-campus apartments that are as close to campus and classroom buildings as university housing. In addition, we have information about other apartments for rent by US students who are planning to study overseas for a semester.

Where do I apply?

Students who want to live on campus must submit a housing application to the International Programs office. You'll receive more information once you are admitted to the University. If you choose to live off campus or in a private unit, you need to apply directly to the building manager. We can help you with this.

Important: exchange students cannot apply directly to the Office of Housing & Residential Life. Please submit your application to International Programs.

What is the deadline for my housing application?

On-campus housing application deadlines are May 1 for fall semester and December 1 for spring semester. Off-campus and private apartments are on a first-come, first-served basis, and applications are accepted until spaces are full.

Can I choose what building I want to live in?

Different residence halls are open to exchange students each year, and the International Programs office will inform you which buildings are available for your term of study. You can list buildings by order of preference.

Is housing guaranteed?

We cannot guarantee University housing, so we encourage early applications. Students unable to find on-campus housing need to research off-campus alternatives. The International Programs office will support you in your search. All exchange students will be able to find reasonable accommodation near campus.

Can I change my housing?

You should carefully research housing options before making a commitment. On-campus housing is convenient, and many students enjoy living with other University students. However, residence halls often have shared bathrooms and showers. An apartment may offer more private space, but may be farther from campus. In some cases, an apartment may appear cheaper, but you must also consider additional costs, and apartment leases might extend much longer than the time you'll be in Minnesota. We encourage you to carefully review all options and make a firm decision. It's very difficult to be released from a housing contract or apartment lease.

Do I have to buy a meal plan?

Students who live on campus may be required to purchase a University meal plan. If you live in a residence hall, you must purchase a plan, as there are no cooking facilities in individual rooms. If you live in an on-campus apartment (for example, University Village), or if you live off campus, you can choose to purchase a meal plan, but it isn't required.

How do I pay for housing?

On-campus housing will be billed to your student account, and the full amount is due after classes have started. Off-campus housing units have different payment deadlines and schedules. Contact the housing manager for more information.
