SMO Department header

Welcome

The Strategic Management and Organization (SMO) department seeks to enhance managers’ abilities to create value in their organizations through scholarship and teaching.

Our research addresses firm strategy, industry competition, ethics and entrepreneurship in domestic and international contexts. We also address the roles of individuals and the groups in companies as well as the social and economic environments within which firms operate.

Our research covers formal theory, practical models and detailed empirical analyses of individual, group, and firm behavior and performance across companies, industries and countries.

Strategy, entrepreneurship, international business, ethics and organizational behavior and theory are, by nature, multidisciplinary. Hence our research draws from fields ranging from psychology, sociology, economics, and political science, to philosophy to further the understanding of individuals, firms and industries. Our faculty members are diverse in culture, research emphasis and academic pursuits. We value these differences and the synergies they create.

Our teaching helps undergraduates, MBAs, PhDs and executives advance their careers in business and academia. We offer core and elective courses on key topics in strategic management and organization studies at the Carlson School and in our Global MBA programs and other international programs. Our faculty also teach in many Carlson School executive development programs. The Strategic Management department offers courses in Industry and Competitive Analysis, Strategic Alliances, Negotiation, Leadership, Entrepreneurship and International Management, among others. Our doctoral students have gone on to take faculty positions at leading universities including MIT, NYU, Rice, Carnegie Mellon, University of Pittsburgh, University of South Carolina, and George Washington University.

We welcome you to the exciting world of Strategic Management and Organization. We hope that our excitement about our research and the scope of our interests will touch some aspect of your professional or academic life and that you will join the SMO community.
