Carlson School PhD candidates generally take 8000-level courses. Students must complete at least 40 semester credits of coursework for the degree, covering the major area, minor/supporting fields, and methodology. Each area of concentration within business administration has specific coursework requirements.
Doctoral students concentrating in accounting must complete at least three of the following six accounting seminars (not including 8892 or 8894), along with methodology and supporting field courses.
The PhD finance concentration requires a strong mastery of economic theory. Students spend the first year taking doctoral-level sequences in microeconomic theory and econometric analysis. They also take four 2-credit departmental courses in the first year. In the second year, coursework includes classes on current topics in finance, along with elective courses in accounting, economics, or mathematics. The program requires a minimum of eight electives.
Students must take a minimum of 46 semester credits over the course of two years, including 14 credits within the IDSC core courses listed (not including 8892 or 8894). We also require appropriate research methodology and supporting field courses.
Students must take all five marketing seminars (excluding 8892 and 8894), plus a minimum of 12 credits of research methodology courses external to the department, and appropriate minor or supporting field coursework. Most marketing seminars are offered during alternating years.
We require students to take at least five of the department's seven core courses (8101, 8201, 8202, 8301, 8302, 8401, 8402), along with methodology and supporting field coursework.
