We encourage all HRIR M.A. students who are finishing their degree requirements between September 2008 and August 2009 to participate in the Carlson School commencement ceremony in May. To participate, send an e-mail message to Susan Suchy at ssuchy@umn.edu and include your current mailing address. Invitations are mailed out in March. Please return your name/reader card to Susan promptly.

 

CARLSON SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT for GRADUATE STUDENTS

Monday, May 18, 2009 at 9:00 a.m.


Members of the Carlson School’s Master’s programs will meet on Northrop Mall on the East Bank campus prior to commencement exercises. HRIR students should meet in front of Vincent Hall. Please arrive by 8:00 a.m. Staff will be on hand to direct you to your place in line. The ceremony will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please keep the following in mind as you prepare to graduate:

  • Invite as many guests as you wish; no tickets are needed.
  • Please do not bring valuables to commencement.No storage space is available.
  • In case of rain, please meet in the lobby of Northrop Auditorium.
  • Put your tassel on the left side of your cap.
  • The ceremony will last approximately 1.5 hours.
  • At the line up, you will get your name card from HRIR staff, making sure the information is correct. Do not lose this card as it indicates your place in the processional. Carry this card with you to the marshal at the top of the stage stairs.The card will be given to the reader to announce your name as you cross the stage. The photographer will be using the card to send you your graduation photo proofs.
  • Parking, directions, and other logistical information is online at carlsonschool.umn.edu/commencement

Note that the Graduate School Commencement Attendance Approval Form is not required for the Carlson School commencement ceremony. This approval form is used only if you want to attend the separate Graduate School ceremony. HRIR M.A. students rarely attend the Graduate School ceremony.

 

RECEPTION
The Carlson School will host a reception immediately following the ceremony in the atrium of the school.

 

OFFICIAL GRADUATION DATES
Commencement is ceremonial; it is not a certification of graduation. Whether or not you participate in the commencement ceremony, to officially earn your degree you must request a Graduate Degree Packet from the Graduate School online athttp://www.grad.umn.edu/current_students/forms/masters.html, in person at 316 Johnston Hall, or by calling (612) 625-4019.This packet includes two important forms: 1) a degree application form and 2) a final report form (GS31 form). Complete the degree application form and return both forms to Susan Suchy in person at 3-300AA CarlSMgmt, the drop box in front of 3-300 or via regular mail to:

The Director of Graduate Studies will sign the final report form and send it to the Graduate School once your final grades have been recorded on your transcript. Degrees are awarded monthly by the Graduate School. You must submit your graduation forms to Susan Suchy by the 15th of the month prior to intended month of graduation. The award of the degree should appear on your transcript within one month following graduation. The diploma will be mailed from the Registrar’s office three to four months after graduation. If you are in your last semester and did not file your program of study with the Graduate School, you must do so immediately; otherwise, check your program and file a petition form if you have made changes in the courses you have taken. After you graduate, you automatically become a lifetime member of the Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies Alumni Association (CHRLSAA)! The mission of the CHRLSAA is to strengthen the relationship of alumni to the University of Minnesota Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies and to promote leadership in the industrial relations and human resources profession through exchanging ideas, fostering professional relationships, providing academic and professional learning experiences, facilitating access to CHRLS resources, and sharing professional opportunities.
