Global Enrichment Application FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions- Your Application Resource

**Please note this information only applies to Global Enrichment short-term programs, this does not apply to Global Immersion semester exchanges.**

What are my options for submitting my application?

We accept only online applications and materials uploaded through the online application.  We do not accept paper applications or materials.

How many programs can I apply to at one time?

You can apply to no more than two programs that have the same application deadline. You must rank your top choices (1, 2) and you must include a separate essay for each program.  If you submit the same essay for both programs, you will only be considered for your first choice program.

If I apply to two programs with the same application deadline will I be charged two application fees?

No, you will only be charged one $50.00 application fee to your University of Minnesota student account.

I want to apply to multiple programs with different application deadlines, what should I do?

You will need to wait until the online application opens for each program.  The application cycle refers to the period in which you can apply for a given program.  The application will close at midnight on the final day of the application cycle.  Please click here to navigate to a chart listing the application dates.  You can only apply for a program during the cycle that it is open.

Programs that are listed at 'Rolling' may close prior to the deadline date if the program fills, so early application is encouraged.

Programs that are listed as 'Priority Deadline' will continue to accept applications after the specified deadline if the program does not fill.  Applications will be reviewed on a space available basis.

What happens if I miss the application deadline?

Late applications are not accepted. The online application closes at midnight on the deadline date.  If you miss the application deadline, you will need to reapply the following year for consideration.

How does rolling admission work?

Applications are accepted starting the first day listed for the rolling admission and are reviewed as they are received.  Depending on interest, a program may fill before the final date listed for the rolling admissions, so early application is strongly encouraged.

How competitive is it to get into a program?

Competitiveness varies by program and by year (we can never predict exactly how many applications we will get for a given program) but our programs are typically highly competitive. For our most competitive graduate programs (2-week programs), it is not unusual to get two to three times as many applications as spaces.  We have a rigorous selection process, and meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee acceptance.

What are your selection criteria?

The essay is given the most weight and we look for essays that clearly answer the questions using specific examples and providing clarifying details.  Evidence of research into the program, and a clear understanding of the program’s goals and structure are important.

The resume needs to be up-to-date, easy to read, and be free from errors.  It should clearly outline your professional background and skills. We want to admit a diverse and interesting group of students who will contribute to and benefit from an education abroad experience. We are interested in the experiences and qualifications that distinguish you from other applicants.

We will review an online version of your University of Minnesota transcript.  This confirms that participants meet the minimum 3.0 minimum GPA. Students with high GPA’s are noted for extra consideration.

All parts of the application are important. The essay is the largest piece, and each of the other materials are reviewed and add to the overall rating of the application.

What else should I know about the essay?

The essay should be double spaced, 12-point font, normal margins and no more than two pages in length. Please carefully proof read your essay for spelling and grammatical errors as these result in immediate lowering of your chances for acceptance.

Can I apply if I just started at the Carlson School and don’t have any grades from my classes yet?

Yes, you can apply.  However, please note that without any grades the selection process is more difficult, and your application will need to be exceptional in all other ways to make up for the lack of grades.  If your schedule permits, we would encourage you to consider applying when you are further along in your program.

Is it true that if it is your last semester at the Carlson School you are guaranteed a spot on a program?

No, this is not true.  Students participate in international programs at all points in their Carlson School career.  If the committee must decide between two applications that are otherwise equal, preference goes to the candidate with fewer credits left to complete.

Can I participate in more than one Carlson School study abroad program?

Yes, you may.  However, each application is judged independently, so selection to one program does not guarantee selection into another program.

How does my previous international experience, or lack of, factor in the selection process?

We believe that a well-rounded program will have students who have extensive international experience, and students who have little to no international experience and a range in between.

If I do not get into a program, can I be placed on a waitlist?

We do have waitlists for our programs and we select the students for the waitlist during our selection process.  If you are not nominated a program, your notification letter will clearly state if you have been placed on the waitlist.

If I am waitlisted, how likely is it for me to get a place on that program?

We place a limited number of students on the waitlist. That number varies by program and is based on the maximum amount of students we have seen go from the waitlist to getting a place on the program. However, there is no guarantee that a spot will become available.

How will International Programs notify me of my status?

We will notify you via your University of Minnesota email address of your acceptance status.  Notifications are typically sent out four weeks after the application deadline.  Please make sure to check your U of M email account.
