ApplicationDeadlines

All prospective students should submit their application materials as soon as possible, but no later than the application deadline.

Applying for Fall Entry:

Ph.D. Applicants January 1st
Day M.A. Applicants that are interested in department-awarded financial aid February 1st
International M.A. Applicants As soon as possible (before February 1st if you are interested in department-awarded financial aid), but no later than May 15th
Day and Evening M.A. Applicants June 15th


Applying for Spring Entry:

M.A. Applicants October 15th

Please note, the Ph.D. program does not accept applications for the spring semester. It is strongly recommended that day M.A. students begin the program in the fall semester.


English as a Second Language Proficiency

The TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English, except those who will have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within 24 months of the applicant's proposed term of entry) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States before entering the University of Minnesota. This requirement will not be waived.


International students are required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB exam to be considered for admission. The minimum requirements for admission is a score of at least 79 on the Internet based TOEFL with section scores of 21 on writing and 19 on reading (550 on the paper based TOEFL), or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS or 80 on the MELAB.
