Declaring Your Major

All students at the University of Minnesota should have a declared major by the time they have earned 60 credits. Students in the Carlson School may declare a major once they have completed or have in progress the five required tool courses – Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Calculus, Business Statistics, and Financial Accounting. Most Carlson School students declare a major during their sophomore year.

To declare a Carlson School major or minor, complete the Major/Minor Declaration form available in the Undergraduate Program office, 2-190 Hanson Hall, or online at:

For students who were admitted prior to Fall 2007 https://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/page9075.aspx

For students who were admitted Fall 2007 and later https://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/page9076.aspx

Please note that many upper level major courses require that you have a declared major before you can register for them.

Declaring Additional Majors Outside of Carlson

Carlson School students may choose to declare an additional major or minor from another college on the Twin Cities campus and should contact the specific department as early as possible to inquire about the admission or declaration requirements for their program.
