Transfer Coursework

Students who complete coursework at another institution may need to file a petition to have the course meet specific U of M requirements.  In all cases, students are encouraged to work closely with their adviser to have courses reviewed and approved.

Liberal Education Coursework:

  • Current Carlson School students who wish to take a liberal education course elsewhere must obtain Scholastic Committee approval prior to enrolling in the course.  Select classes listed on the transfer guide, and then submit a petition with the specific course number, term, and institution where you wish to take the course.
  • New transfer students who wish to petition a liberal education course completed at a previous institution should submit their request to the Office of Admissions, following the guidelines outlined on their website here.

Business Coursework:

  • Current Carlson students are discouraged from taking business coursework at another institution unless they are participating in the National Student Exchange Program or a study abroad program.  See below for details on petitioning courses while studying abroad.
  • New transfer students who completed business coursework at their previous institution must submit a syllabus for review as part of their condition of admission.  Syllabi are not accepted until after formal acceptance to the school, but should be submitted prior to the first term in the school in order to plan for registration as accurately as possible.

Courses taken abroad:

In order to receive credit for coursework taken abroad, you will want to plan with your academic adviser to have courses reviewed and approved.

For a business semester, it's realistic to think about 1-2 classes in your major and several electives to total approximately 15 credits.

Follow the process below to petition coursework:

Liberal Education courses:

  • Check the Learning Abroad Center's course database to locate courses which have been previously approved to meet liberal education requirements, or to submit a course for approval.  See: http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/academic/libEd.html.

Business coursework:

  • Obtain the syllabus from the program website or LAC program adviser.
  • Bring along to your meeting with your academic adviser and together you will review the study abroad course database
  • If the course has not been previously reviewed or has expired, you will fill out a petition, and your adviser will forward to the faculty for review.

Other major or minor coursework outside of the Carlson School:

  • Consult with your adviser in this department as to the process.  Usually a syllabus will be required
  • Obtain the syllabus from the LAC program adviser or the website of your program
  • Share the results with your Carlson adviser

Elective coursework:

  • Coursework intended to fulfill elective credits toward graduation does not need to be petitioned, but should be reviewed with your adviser and noted on the Academic Planning form.
