IBUS 5190: Doing Business in Brazil

Location: São Paulo, Brazil

Dates: January 5 - 18, 2014

Term: Fall 2–8 weeks

Objective: Students will study Brazil's relationship to the international economy, marketing dynamics, ethics in market relations, finance and banking, foreign trade, operations, strategies for multinationals, and other topics. Social, political, and cultural dimensions of doing business in Brazil will also be considered. This program provides a broad focus on the Brazilian business environment.

Eligibility

This program is open to Carlson graduate students in good academic standing, with a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.

Location

São Paulo is the capital of Brazil and a major economic and cultural center of the region. It's the second largest metropolitan area in the world with a population of nearly 29 million people. Brazil is one of the top 15 trade partners with the United States and São Paulo is home to a wide variety of multinational corporations.

Escola de Administracão de Empresas de São Paulo da Fundacão Getulio Vargas (FGV) is the largest private business school in Latin America. A pioneer in business administration education in Brazil, FGV provides a premier environment for teaching, researching, and consulting.

Schedule

Students take classes over the two weeks from FGV faculty. Students can expect full class days with both morning and afternoon sessions. A cultural tour of Sao Paulo and 3- 4 visits complement the class sessions. This program has a demanding schedule and academic standards are high. Students will spend some time each evening on readings for the next time and working on papers and group projects as all of the academic content is completed during the two weeks in Brazil. Please note that there is no Carlson faculty member on this program.

Housing and Food

Students are housed at a centrally-located hotel within walking distance of FGV and students will share a room with one or two classmates of their same gender. Because networking and community-building are key parts of the program, students will not have the option of a single room. Guests are not permitted during the program. Breakfast daily, a welcome dinner, and a closing dinner are provided.

Cost Estimate

These estimates will vary based on student preference and exchange rates. All details subject to change based on economic and international factors. Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad programs.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad. University of Minnesota students are eligible for education abroad scholarships. See Costs & Billing for additional information on financial aid and scholarships.

Application and Admission

To apply, please visit the Apply page. Students will be charged a $50 application fee.

The application cycle starts on March 15 and the priority deadline is June 15.

Applications will be reviewed and students will be informed of their status within 4 weeks of the application deadline.
