IBUS 5110: Business & The Environment in Costa Rica

Location: Alajuela, Costa Rica

Dates: January 4-18, 2014 (Tentative); Five pre-departure sessions during Fall Semester B-Term, Wednesdays 5:45-7:15PM

Term: 2013 Fall 2–8 weeks

Objective: This program explores in depth the concepts and principles of green business. The course is designed to familiarize students with global environmental challenges businesses face, especially in the Latin American context, and to provide tools as to how to deal with those challenges. Students will learn about global environmental problems and policies and about the methods companies are employing to cope and respond. U.S. and international faculty lead sessions that delve into issues of sustainable development and environmental strategy for business around the world.

  • Increase your knowledge of sustainability and good business practices, and how practices are applied in Costa Rica and around the world.

Audience and Eligibility

  • This program is open to 30 Carlson students in good academic standing, with a GPA of 3.0 at the time of application.
  • The application process is competitive, and space is limited. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance.
  • Classes will be a mix of INCAE and Carlson students

Academics and Credit

  • 4 graduate elective credits
  • Grading is A-F basis

Please note this class is NOT a substitute for the Ethics core requirement. Students are evaluated by both Carlson and INCAE faculty.

Location

Costa Rica is a world leader in sustainable development and the promotion of ecologically sound tourism practices and Instituto Centroamericano de Administración de Empresas (INCAE) is a top MBA program in Latin America, emphasizing research and innovation. INCAE boasts the Center for Competitiveness and Sustainable Development, a leading institution in the study of corporate environmental strategy.

Schedule

This program has a demanding schedule and academic standards are high. Students will take classes from a Carlson faculty member and INCAE faculty members. Tours, field trips, and site visits complement class sessions, but the majority of time is spent on the INCAE campus. Students are paired in multicultural teams for group work and case presentations. Housing and Food

Students are housed in bungalows on the INCAE campus and will share a room with one or two classmates of their same gender. Because networking and community-building are key parts of the program, single room are not available. Bungalows include a shared kitchen, bathroom, and living facilities. Guests are not permitted during the program. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday–Friday are provided in the INCAE cafeteria. Please note the meals are not provided on weekends and you will need to plan accordingly.

Fees are based on estimates and may change due to international economic factors. This information applies to 2012-2013 programs.

*Calculated based on the estimated 2012-2013 PTMBA tuition rate. Students enrolled in another degree program will be charged the tuition rate for four credits associated with their degree program. Please see One Stop for more information about tuition and fees or contact us with questions.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad. University of Minnesota students are eligible for education abroad scholarships. See Costs & Billing for additional information on financial aid and scholarships.

Application and Admission

To apply, please visit the Apply page. Students will be charged a $50 application fee.

The application starts on March 15 and the priority deadline is June 15. Applications for programs that do not fill by the priority deadline will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 1 or until full.

Applications will be reviewed and students will be informed of their status via email within 4 weeks of the priority deadline.
