Location

Barcelona faces the Mediterranean Sea from the Iberian Peninsula with a majestic range of mountains forming a scenic background. The city is host to a number of museums, parks, and design fairs. Some of the primary sectors of the service economy are logistics and telecommunications. The social scene and pleasant climate have made Barcelona an international hub of business networks, holiday seekers, and students interested in soaking in the rich culture of Catalonia.

School

The Escuela Superior de Adminstración y Dirección de Empresas (ESADE) is annually ranked as one of the finest international MBA programs in the world. Among the most competitive international programs offered at the Carlson School, potential students should begin planning early to apply.

ESADE is an institution founded with a clear aim: to adopt a humanistic approach in the training of critical professionals capable of coping with a changing world. The challenging curriculum at ESADE focuses on preparing managers for an increasingly complex international business environment with an emphasis on teamwork and a global approach to problem solving. The school reflects this mission through consistently training leaders that add value to their companies.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

  • A current student enrolled in a Carlson School Part-Time MBA or MA-HRIR program
  • In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Additional criteria may apply

Academics

Students in the program receive up to 14 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5300) credits for their semester at ESADE. These International Business credits will automatically count toward the total number of credits required for the Carlson degree. Students will need to maintain a full-time enrollment in order to confer the full number of credits.

Carlson School MBA students can elect to enroll in either MBA program or Masters of Science of Management courses at ESADE. Students will need to select one track, as cross-enrollment in both programs is not allowed. MA-HRIR candidates are enrolled in the MSc. track. A sample of course topics include:

Housing

Students make their own housing arrangements. ESADE provides a list of hotels and hostels, but recommends waiting until arrival in Barcelona. One resource is the University's boards and Intranet; many Spanish students are going on an exchange themselves and will rent their apartments.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad. In addition, University of Minnesota students are eligible for education abroad scholarships. See Scholarships and Finances for additional information.

Application and Admission

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling-admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee. Applications will be reviewed following the deadline and you will be notified of your status by official letter in April. Once selected, you will be asked to pay a $500 deposit in order to confirm your place in the program.
