This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English or Mandarin) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Since opening its economy to the world over 30 years ago, China has undergone a profound transformation, recently spurred by the award of the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing and the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. With over 17 million inhabitants, Beijing is China's second largest city and recognized as the political, educational and cultural center of the country.

Founded in 1911, Tsinghua University is one of the leading universities directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China and is known as the prominent center for higher education and scientific research. The School of Economics and Management offers bachelor’s degrees in Management and Economics, with additional courses in Information Systems, Economics and Finance, and Accounting. Tsinghua welcomes exchange students from 73 partner schools in 26 countries.

Located in Haidian District of Beijing, formerly known as a royal garden of Qing Dynasty, Tsingua University’s campus is famous for its beautiful surroundings and is listed as one of the world's top 14 most beautiful college campuses by Forbes Magazine in 2010, the only one from Asia.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

*Students are able to make special arrangements for final exams in cases where fall semester final exams conflict with U of M spring semester classes.

Students are enrolled in 16 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for a semester at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management. Classes typically take the form of lectures, seminars or case-based team projects, and active participation is encouraged. About half of Tsinghua's class offerings are taught in English. Classes in Mandarin are open to exchange students.

A very limited number of on-campus dormitory style accommodations are offered in the Zijing Foreign Student Dormitory. The facility is adjacent to dormitories where Chinese students live. All dorms were built within the past 10 years and include a kitchen, washing machine, and study lounge on each floor, with weekly cleaning service. Single, AB double (with in-suite bathroom), and standard double (shared bathroom) rooms are offered, with costs varying across options.

Students who are not able to obtain on-campus housing make their own arrangements upon arrival in Beijing.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Chinese citizens are not eligible for this exchange program
• Additional criteria may apply

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies.
