This is a semester exchange program, where students take classes (in English or Mandarin) directly at a partner university and substitute that semester for a semester at the University of Minnesota. The partner university will send one of their students to the Carlson School of Management to take classes in their place.

Exchanges often require students to demonstrate a high degree of independence, adaptability, and flexibility because support and service may be different from a US university. Examples of differences that exchange students should be prepared to encounter include varying housing options, the amount and timing of program details, grading based less on assignments and more on final exams, and an academic calendar that may differ significantly from the University of Minnesota.

Taiwan lies across the Taiwan Strait a short distance from mainland China off the southeastern coast. The mountainous island offers countless hiking opportunities to accompany the urban lifestyle that characterizes the island's western plains. The culture of Taiwan is one in flux as the country balances its distinctly Chinese past with an ever-increasing global identity spurred by the influx of Asian and Western immigrant groups. The country continues to occupy the world stage as the controversy continues surrounding Taiwan's cultural and political relationship with China.

National Taiwan University (NTU) was given its present name in 1945 and the institution has existed since 1928 when it was named Taihoku Imperial University. Since its inception, NTU has been not only the oldest university in the country but also the leader in higher education institutions in terms of breadth of academic offerings. NTU has been working with international partners and exchanging students for more than ten years, and exchange students will find an exciting academic environment with fellow students from the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific Regions.

When selecting a semester exchange program, students should take note of academic calendars that differ significantly from the University of Minnesota. Consider potential conflicts such as holidays, family events, graduation ceremonies, and summer jobs/internships early in the selection process.

Work with Education Abroad Advisers and the Carlson Business Career Center for support addressing challenges.

Students are enrolled in 16 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for a semester in Taiwan, enrolling in four courses plus a Chinese language certificate course that runs the duration of the semester at NTU.

Carlson School students are able to select courses from every department at the NTU College of Management. Courses are offered in both English and Mandarin, and final information on specific offerings are available to accepted students about one month prior to registration. Courses are available in Business Administration, International Business, Accounting, Finance, and Information Management. A sample of available courses includes:

On-campus housing is available for students in double bed rooms. There are also rooms available off-campus and the cost of private housing options will vary depending on type and location. NTU will provide detailed information to accepted students on how and where to apply for housing for the time they will be in Taiwan.

To be eligible for this education abroad program, you must be:

• A University of Minnesota student who has successfully completed the I-Core curriculum or equivalent coursework
• In good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Additional criteria may apply and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th priority deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee, and selection notifications are sent out within one month of the priority deadline or receipt of application during rolling admission. Once selected, students are given the opportunity to confirm acceptance, at which point they are subject to Education Abroad policies.
