About the Symposium:  

The Emerging Markets Symposium gathers business leaders, academics, and MBA students to discuss doing business effectively in emerging economies. The event features student presentations on companies doing business in China and Chile, based on their research and recent international visits to firms such as Syngenta, Antofagasta, and IBM in Chile; and GE Healthcare, AON, Huiyuan Juice, and Nike in China.

Following the student presentations, J. Andres Morel (CEO, Twin Metals), Carol Kitchen (SVP and General Manager, Land O'Lakes) and Kim Anderson (Chairman of the Board, Anderson Cook, Inc.) will participate in a luncheon panel discussion entitled "Emerging Risks in Emerging Markets."

The event is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required by Monday, February 20, 2012. We are not able to accommodate walk-in registrations.

Speaker Bios

Kim Anderson, Chairman of the Board, Anderson-Cook IncorporatedKim Anderson
Kim Anderson is Chairman of the Board of the Anderson-Cook family of companies. Founded in 1971, Anderson-Cook comprises eight companies providing components, manufacturing and advanced machining solutions to automotive, manufacturing and related industries. Anderson-Cook has operations in the US (Michigan), Canada (Ontario), Mexico (Guanajuato) and China (Shanghai). A native of Michigan, Kim attended Harvard University, Michigan State University and the Detroit College of Law. Kim also serves on various boards and advises family-led businesses. Carol S. Kitchen, Senior Vice President, General Manager Global Ingredients, Land O'Lakes, Inc.Carol S Kitchen
Kitchen was named to her current position as Senior Vice President and General Manager, Global Ingredients in January 2012. Most recently, she was Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy Business Development and International. She has 20 years of cooperative experience, previously working as Vice President, business-to-business, for Land O'Lakes Purina Feed with responsibilities for Feed's premix business, LabDiet®, Innovative Proteins and International Development. Prior to joining Land O'Lakes, Kitchen held roles in accounting at both GROWMARK Inc., a regional cooperative, and with Arthur Andersen & Company, an accounting firm based in Chicago. She is active in Women's Leadership initiatives for the Greater Twin Cities United Way. Kitchen holds a master's of Business Administration from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. She received her bachelor's degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois and is a Certified Public Accountant.

 

 

J. Andres Morel, Chief Executive Officer, Twin Metals Minnesota J Andres Morel
Juan Andres Morel (Andres) is the chief executive officer of Twin Metals Minnesota, a joint venture company of partners Duluth Metals Limited and Antofagasta PLC. Andres was appointed CEO in September, 2010, moving from his native Chile to Minnesota to take over the helm of this project. Morel has worked in the mining field his entire career, beginning as an engineer and open-pit mine-shaft boss in the San Cristobal Mine in Antofagasta, Chile. Morel climbed the ranks rapidly, becoming a mine manager, chief operating manager and eventually general manager for Minera El Tesoro, a copper mine in Sierra Gorda, Chile, part of the Antofagasta Minerals S.A. Group. He spent five years (2006-2010) as the general manger of this mine, which annually produced 95,000 tons of copper cathode (sheets). Morel earned an engineering degree from the Universidad of Chile in 1991 and later a master's degree in business administration from Pontificia Universidad Católica, in Santiago, Chile. His 20 years of mining experience spans operations, engineering and management of gold and copper mining companies, as well as underground and open-pit mining operations. Morel has worked on a vast array of mining projects, from start-ups to modeling geological resources and mining planning. The mines he has managed in the past have set the standard for safety, environmental conservancy and social impacts. Morel was born in 1966 and is married, with two young children and resides in Eden Prairie, Minn.
