Choosing Classes

Class Offerings

The Class Schedule can be found at OneStop Class Schedule. The Reading the One Stop Class Schedule instructions will help you choose the appropriate term and department to see a list of courses offered during the semester of your exchange.

As an exchange student, you must take at least 12 credits per semester to maintain your visa status. The maximum number of credits is 19, and most Carlson School students enroll for 14–16 credits per semester. You may need to take more credits to fulfill the requirements of your home university. Please check with your coordinator for details and requirements.

Generally, graduate and MBA students will select courses at the 6xxx level (8xxx for HRIR). Undergraduate students will select courses at the 3xxx, 4xxx, and 5xxx levels. Undergraduates are not allowed in graduate courses, and graduate students who take undergraduate courses may have difficulty transferring the credits back to their home school. Note that all non-HRIR classes at the 8xxx level are for admitted doctoral students and are not open to exchange students.

We highly recommend that you get all courses, including your alternates, approved by your home university. This will make it easier to transfer credits back to your home university after you study abroad.

Restricted Classes

The following courses are not available to exchange students:

  • MBA 6030: Financial Accounting (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6110: Management & Organizational Behavior (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6120: Data Analysis & Statistics for Managers (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6140: Managerial Economics (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6150: Managerial Communications (sections 1, 2, 3 & 4)
  • MBA 6210: Marketing Management (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6220: Operations Management (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6230: Financial Management (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6235: Managerial Accounting (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6240: Information Technology Management (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6300: Strategic Management (sections 1 & 2)
  • MBA 6315: The Ethical Environment of Business (sections 1 & 2)
  • ENTR 6041: New Product Design & Business Development(2 semesters in length)
  • MGMT 3070: Special Topics in Management (closed to exchange students)
  • MGMT 6004: Negotiation Strategies (course usually at full capacity)
  • MGMT 6031: Industry Analysis & Competitive Strategy (course usually at full capacity)
  • MKTG 6075: Pricing Strategy (course usually at full capacity)
  • All non-HRIR 8xxx level courses

The Carlson School has different exchange agreements with various partner schools, and some exchange students are restricted in the courses they may take. Review the Partner School Course Guidelines for details.

Closed Courses

Some of the courses you want may be full by the time you arrive on campus to register. Most closed classes will have a wait list. Though the Carlson Global Institute will help you get the classes you need, we cannot guarantee admittance and urge you to consider alternatives. If you really need a particular class, bring documentation from your home coordinator stating that the class is required.
