MAcc Admissions Frequently Asked Questions

All applicants must have the equivalent of an accredited United States bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. In addition, all international applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. The TOEFL or IELTS is generally required of all applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of U.S. citizenship status. Applicants who have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within the past 24 months) in residence as a full-time student at a recognized institution of higher learning in the United States or other English-speaking country before entering the University of Minnesota are generally exempted from this requirement. Our TOEFL institutional code is 6874.

No. We accept students from across the United States and from around the world. Many of our domestic students completed their undergraduate degrees at various universities around the U.S., but wish to begin their careers in Minnesota (many are originally from Minnesota).

We do not have minimum GMAT scores and do not use formulas. We read and evaluate every aspect of your application. If you take the GMAT over to improve the score, we will consider the highest score. In general, we prefer an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) for admission. Your work experience (for part-time applicants), essays, and professional recommendations are also very important in the admission decision, but our main concern is whether you will be able to experience academic success in our program.

Our admissions coordinator will invite eligible candidates to interview with the program director at the Carlson School of Management. If you live out of town, state or country, your interview can be conducted via phone or email. The admissions interview provides all eligible candidates an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the MAcc or the University of Minnesota.

No. The MAcc program does not make provisional or conditional provisions.

The MAcc program does not require work experience for admission. MAcc admits applicants directly from an undergraduate accounting or finance program or admits applicants who have earned the equivalent of an accounting or finance degree as a full-time student. MAcc also admits applicants as part-time students who typically have worked for a few years and obtained their CPA.
