CIBER Opens for Business...and Educators

The University of Minnesota has officially joined a select network of higher-education institutions with the opening of its Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) housed at the Carlson School.

Devoted to increasing and promoting the nation's capacity for international understanding and competitiveness, UMN CIBER's mission is to advance the knowledge and understanding of global business issues. The new center at the Carlson School will focus on emerging markets, environmental sustainability, and less commonly-taught languages and serve businesses and educators in Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Details are still being finalized, however, planned activities for businesses include:

  • A mini-conference on emerging markets at the Carlson School on February 11, 2011.
  • Roundtable discussions on sustainability and emerging markets in partnership with the Minnesota Trade Office, Minnesota International Center, Enterprise Minnesota and other organizations.
  • Non-credit Chinese language courses for businesses.

Educators can expect:

  • Support for K-16 language instructors looking to add international business content to their curricula, in conjunction with the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) summer institute for teachers.
  • A summer program for K-12 teachers on an international business topic through the university's Institute for Global Studies.
  • Increased involvement of language instructors in education abroad programs.

UMN CIBER will also benefit faculty and researchers though:

  • Grants for faculty and PhD candidates on research with an international business focus.
  • Faculty development in business programs around the world.
  • Support for regional faculty looking to develop or deepen international business programs.
  • The University of Minnesota was awarded the $1.5 million Title VI grant to establish the center earlier this year from the U.S. Department of Education. It was one of three new centers added raising the total to 33. More information on UMN CIBER can be found on its site.
