The Ultimate Homecoming: A Week of Events
Friday, October 2 - Sunday, October 11

There are many ways to engage in the 2009 Ultimate Homecoming event this October. Check out this website for a complete listing of events and ways to participate.


Senior Case Competition Winners
A total of five teams competed and presented to a judging panel comprised of faculty and corporate partners. The two winning teams were:

International Team: Danielle Hilson, Beth Evanson, Vincent Ruiz-Ponce, and Sam Johnmeyer

Domestic Team: Josh Edgar, K.C. Huchendorf, Chad Vaske, and Sam Shaw

These teams will go on to represent the Carlson School at International and National competitions for the remainder of the academic year.

Securian Leadership Lecture Series Presents Orlando “Tubby” Smith
Wednesday, October 14, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. - Carlson School 3M Auditorium

Orlando "Tubby" Smith joined the Gophers in March 2007 as the 16th Head Basketball Coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Smith came to Minnesota after having spent the past 10 seasons (1997-2007) as the head coach at the University of Kentucky. In his first season at Minnesota, Smith finished with a record of 20-14 and during the 2008-2009 season, he finished with a record of 22-11.

Tickets are required for entrance into this event and lunch following the event. Carlson students can pick up their tickets in the Undergraduate Program Office, 2-190 HMH on:

Monday, October 5th, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Tuesday, October 6th, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Thursday, October 8th, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Support Group for Students Grieving the Death of a Parent or Sibling
Tuesdays, 4:40 - 6:10 p.m.
 
University Counseling & Consulting Services offers a group for students grieving the death of a parent or sibling and there are openings this semester.  Members are asked to make a weekly semester commitment.  Students who are interested can contact the UCCS front desk at 624-3323 to schedule a group orientation appointment and questions can be directed to Sarra Beckham-Chasnoff, at 624-3675.

Remember to take advantage of the resources offered through the Undergraduate Business Career Center (UBCC); all workshops and events are located in The Edge under Career Events.


Carlson School Lockers are Available
It's coat weather - want somewhere to store your stuff?  Stop by the Undergraduate Program Office, Hanson Hall 2-190 to rent a locker for the academic school year. Cost is $20 (cash or check) for the academic school year; please have your student ID with you.  Only full-size lockers in the basement of Wilson library are available.

For those wanting to work outside of the Midwest, come to this session to learn how to build a network, transition to a new city and find a job.


Realities of I-Banking Job/Internship Search
Thursday, October 8, 11:45 - 12:45 p.m. - Carlson School 1-127

Developed and led by CSOM seniors that have had I-Banking internships. Attendees will get tips on networking, resumes, interviewing, and succeeding in the internship or job. RSVP by October 5th on The Edge.


Career Panel: Government and Law Enforcement
Tuesday, October 13, 12:30 - 2:00 p.m. - Hubert Humphrey Center 215

Talk to a panel of professionals working in many interesting government and law enforcement fields. Learn about their career paths, what it requires to do their job, and why you might consider a career in any of these fields. Attend the whole event or come for as much as you can!

There are two ways to access information regarding the targeted student population for an information session.

Through On-Campus Interviews (most efficient option):
1. Search on-campus interviews using degree criteria
2. Once you click into an interview schedule, any linked information sessions will be viewable toward the top of the screen

Through Career Events:
1. Search for the event category Info Sessions
2. Click on a particular session and click on "View Employers"
3. Select "Search" on the next screen- it is unnecessary to enter criteria
4. Click on the company name that is returned
5. Within the company registration, all of the job postings that are associated with the information session will be listed.  The job descriptions will contain specific degree requirements

International Programs Study Abroad Scholarships

Students participating in study abroad programs through the Carlson School and the Learning Abroad Center are invited to submit their online application for scholarships.  Awards of up to $1500 are available.  Please check our website for further information or email Deb Basarich with any questions.

Cross-Cultural Leadership Retreat
October 23, 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. and October 24, 9:00 - 5:00 p.m.
101 University International Center, East Bank

This retreat is for both international and U.S. undergraduate students who want to become more effective in international environments. (The retreat will be offered to graduate students during the Spring 2010 semester). This interactive, high-energy event becomes a living laboratory of what it takes to work with people from different cultures. Participants start friendships with people from all over the world and discover their own leadership potential. A cutting edge cross-cultural leadership model, Personal Leadership, will be used to develop participants' cross cultural skill-set that is needed for professional and personal lives in the 21st century. Congress-Bundestag Fellowship in Germany
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is a fellowship for college-age students and recent graduates throughout the US who want to live, study, and intern in Germany. CBYX is funded by the US and German governments for students in all career fields, and does not require any prior German language knowledge! Applicants in business, engineering, scientific, vocational, technical, and agricultural fields are especially encouraged to apply. Participants spend a year studying and working in their fields while completely immersed in the German language and culture.

Net Impact Speaker "The A-List" Non-Profit
Tuesday, October 6, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. - Carlson School L-114

Come to Net Impact's next meeting at 12pm on Tuesday, October 6th to learn about "The A-List," a non-profit organization started by two of Carlson's very own students Asha Sharma and Matt Norris. "The A-List" received a $10,000 grant from Ernst and Young for winning the competition "Your World, Your Vision" in which five Carlson students submitted the winning business plan for the "The A-List" non-profit organization. "The A-List" has a strategic partnership with Champions for Youth to impact Brooklyn Park Youth in three areas: entrepreneurship, education, and personal growth. Green Biz: Coca-Cola Speaker

Y-Immersion Trip Leaders Wanted
Applications accepted through October 15 - University YMCA

The Immersion program sends college students on service trips over winter and spring break to locations across the country and around the world in order to engage themselves in social justice and environmental issues and receive leadership skills, cultural awareness, and further education on their issues.

Immersion is a group of students who empower their peers to go out into their world and build leadership skills and business acumen, form new friendships and values, and make differences that would not otherwise be possible. The participants of an Immersion trip bring their experiences back to Minnesota and share their knowledge to benefit the community.  The application is posted on the website or email Y-Immersion@YMCAmpls.org with questions.  Priority will be given to applicants whose materials are received by October 8th.


Career and Internship Fair Grants for Carlson Organizations

The Carlson School's Career and Internship Fair Committee would like to make a portion of the proceeds from the Career and Internship Fair available to official Carlson School undergraduate student organizations. Grants will range in amount from $500 - $2,000 and are intended to provide financial support for activities that both build Corporate Partnership with the Carlson School and that are available to, and inclusive of, ALL CARLSON SCHOOL STUDENTS (in addition to club members). Please e-mail Jennifer Shofner by November 2nd with a completed application.
