Tip of the Week:
Preparing for Career Fairs and Conferences

Career fairs have become very prevalent and popular among recruiters in recent years. According to a SHRM/Career Journal Poll Search Tactics Survey, over 70% of human resources departments participating in career fairs depend on them for recruiting. Career fairs are often part of larger events such as professional conferences. They are great for identifying employment opportunities, growing your network, practicing your interview skills, gathering information on industries and companies, finding out about new products/services, and exchanging business cards.

Your goal in preparing for career fairs and conferences is to be memorable by creating a strategic plan. Guidelines for creating such a plan are:
- Know what your “brand” is
- Communicate your brand through your positioning statement
- Determine which companies you’d like to approach and in what order
- Do your company research before the event so you sound prepared and knowledgeable
- Re-read your resume immediately before approaching a recruiter
- Ask recruiters good questions based on your research
- Practice your STAR statements in the event you get an on-the-spot interview
- Ask a coach for help if you need it
- Be confident!

Don’t discount career fairs that are not directly associated with your field or graduate program, such as the Government Job & Internship Fair on Monday, October 26, http://mcucsa.org/govjobfair
