Objective:
This program provides students with a first hand look at the challenges corporations face in the dynamic environment of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and helps them examine business practices of corporations operating in transitional economies. Created as a partnership between Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration) or WU, the Carlson School, and 3M, this program offers students the opportunity to work in multicultural teams on a unique live case study analyzing real-life business problems facing 3M in CEE.
Dates:
May 25 – June 5, 2009 in Vienna and a second CEE location. Pre-departure classes during Spring Term B.
Audience:
21 Carlson School Graduate students; classes will be a mix of WU and Carlson students.
Credit:
4 graduate elective credits. Grading is A-F basis.
Location:
As the capital of Austria, Vienna is considered the economic hub between East and West and is a place many international corporations and organizations call home, including Siemens, 3M, IBM, and Panasonic. World famous for its music, art and culture, Vienna is home to artists and musicians such as Mozart, Beethoven and Klimt. Classes in Vienna will be held at WU, which is acknowledged as a leader in preparing students to do business across the globe.
After the first week in Vienna, the class then moves to the CEE city in which the live 3M case is based. 3M selects the city for the live case, and past locations have included Warsaw, Budapest, Prague and Moscow.
Schedule:
Pre-departure class sessions prepare students for the overseas academic program by familiarizing them with important background and terminology around the 3M case. The program starts with an orientation, city tour and welcome dinner. Students spend the first week in Vienna in class sessions and working in groups to prepare for the case presentations. The weekend is free for travel and sightseeing, or for exploring Vienna.
The students then travel to the second location to further examine the issues and make final recommendations to the corporate partner with official presentations. The program concludes with final class session and a farewell dinner.
Housing and Food:
Students are housed in double or triple rooms in centrally located hotels in each city. Breakfast and lunch is provided daily at the WU cafeteria. A welcome dinner and closing dinner are also provided. To the extent possible, arrangements can be made for an extra fee for students to bring a guest.
Costs and Financial Aid:
Participants pay $5,100 directly to the University of Minnesota. This fee covers tuition for 4 credits, international health insurance, course materials, housing, transportation to all site visits, and transportation between each city, some meals, site visits and group excursions.
