Master's Degree Costume

Academic Costume:

Academic costume is traditional at the University of Minnesota, although it is optional.  At most college ceremonies, 80 percent or more of the candidates wear caps and gowns.  For those MBT students attending commencement who wish to wear a cap and gown, please note that MBT will give you a free master's cap and gown for you to wear at graduation.  Candidates wear dark clothing and dark shoes with academic costume.  Flowers, decorative jewelry and emblems are not appropriate.

Caps and Gowns:

Caps are the same for all academic costumes except the centenary Ph.D. costume, which includes an eight-sided tam.  Wear the cap with the long point of the shell to the back.  Tassels may fall on either side.  Men remove their caps during the invocaiton, the presentation of colors, the national anthem and "Hail! Minnesota."

Where to Get your Cap and Gown:

MBT will give you a free master's cap, tassel, master's hood (a stole) and gown for you to wear at graduation provided you have already told the MBT office that you plan on attending the commencement ceremony and have given us your approximate height.  If you have not done this yet, please submit the Graduation Ceremony Form at the link above.
