Italy boasts the 8th largest economy in the world and the 4th largest in Europe and recent governmental reforms suggest future growth and competitiveness in the globalized business world. Studying in Milan puts Carlson School you on the ground floor of a country rich in history and the arts. You'll also have a front row seat to watch a unique player in international business evolve. With fewer multinational companies than many European neighbors, and growing competition among emerging manufacturing economies in other parts of the world, the ability to know and navigate the culture of Italy has never been more important. Spend a semester in the birthplace of opera, travel to Venice for a weekend to see the regatta, and have the most rewarding experience of your life studying at Università Bocconi.

Università Bocconi was founded in 1902 by Ferdinando Bocconi, a wealthy merchant who wished to commemorate his son who perished in a battle overseas. Since becoming the first Italian institution of higher education to focus on economics and management, Università Bocconi has continued to stand apart as the premier university in Italy. The school is central to a global network of business and economics universities and favors cultural integration, international exchange, and economic integration in its wide-reaching partnerships.

Milan is the largest city in Italy and among the most prominent in all of Europe. Being among the wealthiest cities in the European Union, Milan is the financial center of Italy. Few cities can rival Milan in the area of fashion and associated firms and the Piazza Duomo is said to be the oldest shopping mall in the world. Milan has played host to numerous World and European Cup tournaments and is home to the Italian Stock Exchange.

You will receive 14 S/N Carlson School International Business (IBUS 5100) credits for your semester at Università Bocconi. Students will enroll in a total of 28-30 credits to meet the minimum requirements. An Italian language crash course is also available for an additional cost about one month prior to the start of the program.

Carlson School students enroll in the International Economics and Management program which is taught in English. Università Bocconi recognizes that as political debates of globalization are ongoing, the reality of an economically interdependent business world has long been a reality. The program aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the commercial, financial, and institutional realities of the new global market from an international perspective.

Four-week Italian language classes are offered before the term begins for an additional fee.

Università Bocconi is located in downtown Milan and there is no formal student housing. The International Relations office is able to assist students in finding short-term housing during the time of their exchange. Students will submit applications and preferences for housing to the International Relations office prior and will then be notified of their housing assignment. Rooms are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis and a deposit will be required prior to departure.

Most financial aid may be applied to study abroad. In addition, University of Minnesota students are eligible for education abroad scholarships. Visit the funding your education abroad for additional information on financial aid and scholarships.

Application materials include the online application form, a resume, and essay. Submit a completed application by the February 28th Priority Deadline prior to the academic year in which you wish to participate. Programs that do not fill following the priority deadline will be reviewed on a rolling-admissions basis.

Admission to all programs is based on review of your application by the study abroad selection committee. Applications will be reviewed following the deadline and you will be notified of your status by official letter in April. Once selected, you will be asked to pay a $500 deposit in order to confirm your place in the program.
