In Pursuit of a Dream

This fall, Thomas DeMarco took the first step in realizing his plan to make a difference in the world: he enrolled at the Carlson School of Management as a public/nonprofit management major. "I am studying public/nonprofit management and international business because I want to use my business career not to make millions, but to give back to communities that need help around the world," says DeMarco. He is passionate about connecting less privileged individuals to opportunities that he was fortunate to experience.

In partnership with the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute, the Carlson School is the only business school in the United States to offer a public/nonprofit management major to Undergraduate business students. "The way to create the most change in society is through business," DeMarco believes. "Businesses have the tools and resources to create, manage and continue the change created in society."

One of DeMarco goals at the Carlson School is to gain international experience because he is fascinated by foreign languages and cultures. Next fall, he is headed to Latin America to become better acquainted with the challenges of the region and gain a better understanding of the culture.

DeMarco chose the Carlson School and the University of Minnesota because of the wide array of study abroad programs that would provide him with diverse international experiences. Next fall, all incoming Carlson School freshmen will be required to study abroad at least once during their academic career. Options include seven short-term global enrichment courses and 15 semester exchanges.

DeMarco has learned the importance of networking and has made the most of his time at the Carlson School through connecting with alumni and participating in student groups. Last summer, DeMarco had the opportunity to work for a Carlson School alumnus. "He taught me that life is a lot of work, but with a little elbow grease, a strong mind and determination, you can overcome any obstacle that may arise," says DeMarco. "He has inspired me to work hard to become a future business leader."

To build relationships with peers, DeMarco joined the Business Association for Multi-Cultural Students (BAM), the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group (MPIRG), and the Salsa Dancing Club this semester.

The most important lesson DeMarco has learned from his Carlson experience is that building relationships and getting to know people starts with a smile. "Smiling lets people know you are a warm, positive person and brightens their day as well," he says. He is confident that the Carlson School will provide him with the knowledge and experiences needed to succeed in the business world so that one day he can realize his vision.

In the future, DeMarco hopes to work for an international nonprofit business or possibly start his own.
