Tip of the Week
During this busy recruiting season, it is critical to keep in mind that the interview begins from your very first contact with an employer, be it a resume, phone call or initial meeting. This also applies to interview follow-up, specifically the very important thank you letter. According to a Vault survey, up to 30% of all candidates do not send a thank you letter, while 36% of hiring managers indicate that a thank you letter can help a candidate's prospects. Clearly, a thank you note is essential! It comes down to relationship building. The candidate who sends a thank you is continuing to build a relationship with that employer, regardless of whether they receive an offer. So, be sure to send a customized letter within 24-48 hours of every interview to every person with whom you interviewed. However, for on campus interviews, the GBCC recommends sending it by email within a few hours of the meeting. Email your thank you if the decision timeline is tight and you know that the company is open to email thank you letters. When in doubt, word process or handwrite it using conservative stationary that matches your resume. Finally, consider the words of one recruiter: "When I was hiring, anyone who didn't send a thank you was off my list. It showed that they lacked the kind of follow up I expected."
