DID YOU KNOW: All Carlson students are eligible to access Gartner Research online?

Gartner clients include many large corporations and government agencies, as well as technology companies and the investment community. The company consists of Research, Executive Programs, Consulting and Events. Founded in 1979, Gartner has 4,000 associates, including 1,200 research analysts and consultants in 75 countries worldwide (reference Wikipedia).

You can only access this database on the University network (LAN or Wireless).

Breakout Room Access
If you are having difficulty with accessing a breakout room, send an email to advisbsb@umn.edu with "Room Access" in the subject line.

Please include the following information:

  • Your name and student ID number
  • The 11 digits following 600953 on the front of your U Card
  • The first five orange numbers located on the back upper right corner of your U Card
  • The breakout room number, date & time of occurrence, (i.e. CSOM L-107, 11/18/08, 3:00 p.m.) 
  • Description of issue

Include all of the above information in your email so that we can help resolve the issue.


Women in Leadership Development
Applications for the 2009 cohort are due Monday, December 1

The Women's Center is launching a new leadership development program for undergraduate women students called Women in Leadership Development. This new program offers university women students an opportunity to grow as leaders. A cohort of women students will meet twice a month to learn practical leadership skills that will improve their personal, academic, and professional accomplishments. Each cohort will also have the opportunity to put their leadership principles and interests into action by planning the Women's Center's fall week-long event, Discover Exceptional Women (DEW).

Applications for the 2009 cohort are due December 1 and are available for download on our website at umn.edu/women/wild.html

Breakout Room Announcement Effective October 27, 2008
As of Monday, October 27, breakout rooms in the Carlson School of Management building will be secured with card readers 24 hours a day.

  • Access will be by authorized U Card only.
  • All Carlson School students, faculty, and staff will be authorized for access to these rooms.
  • Students, faculty, and staff whose primary academic home is outside the Carlson School will not be given access to these rooms and may not use them unless accompanied by an authorized Carlson School user. 
  • The equivalent rooms in Hanson Hall will be switched to card access as soon as possible.
  • These rooms will continue to be governed by the existing reservation system.  

Carlson students without reservations may use the rooms 24/7, with the following restrictions:

  •  If someone else has a reservation, the individual with the reservation has precedence.
  • If the room is reserved for a class, class usage takes precedence.
  • If Facilities Management requests that the room be vacated in order to clean it, users are expected to leave promptly.
  • Carlson users who refuse to vacate a room when requested risk loss of access privileges.
  • In order to provide FM with access for cleaning, reservations will only be taken until 10:00 p.m.  After that, rooms are on a first-come, first served basis. If it turns out that there is more demand than there are available rooms, reservation hours will be extended.

U of M China Center Language Partner Program
The goals of this program are:

  • To help Chinese students and scholars at the University of Minnesota improve their English by providing them opportunities to talk with native speakers
  • To help Americans improve their Chinese. Most Americans enrolled in this program are students whose major is Chinese or who are learning Chinese as a second language.

To enroll in this program you can either call the China Center at 612-624-1002 or email chinactr@umn.edu. Please make sure you indicate the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your e-mail address 
  • Your gender 
  • Your native language 
  • Your major or interest 
  • Your preferred phone number (optional)


After we've received your information, we'll search our database and try to find the right match for you. Once we've found a match, we'll notify you and give you an email address so that you can contact your partner directly. Both of you can decide how to arrange your language exchange. If there isn't a language partner match at the time of your request, we'll notify you and place your name on our waiting list. Please call us at 612-624-1002 and let us know whether your exchange partnership is working. If not, we can find another partner for you.

Gotta Mentor and The AlumniAthlete Network are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2009 AlumniAthlete Wall Street Internship Program. The Wall Street Internship Program provides collegiate sophomores and juniors paid internships at the most prestigious investment banking firms in the world. This 10-week, paid internship program is targeted to students who have displayed leadership, teamwork, initiative, and the ability to perform under pressure.  The internship is open to both student-athletes and non-athletes. The early application deadline is December 19 and the regular decision application deadline is January 23.

Are you a freshman who is feeling unsure of what career you want to pursue? This three session career exploration workshop will feature a tour of the Undergraduate Business Career Center, and a discussion of how you can use the Strengths Finder assessment you took, as well as another career assessment you will take, to help you discover possible careers that are right for you.  You will also learn tools and resources for exploring the careers that interest you. Dinner will be served during the workshops. To participate, you must attend all three workshops and be prepared to do a little homework between sessions.

Fellowships for U of M students to serve as interns in elementary schools in Berlin, Germany. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Interns work in an English-language classroom four days a week. One day is open for research and other activities. Program duration: June 6 to July 4, 2009. German language proficiency preferred but not required. Up to 15 fellowships are available.

U-Y Immersion Alternative Winter Break Trips

The Y-Immersion program engages student into an experience in order to grow in awareness of social justice and environmental issues. Through volunteering with such projects domestically and internationally, Y-Immersion participants can build leadership skills, form friendships and values, and make differences they may have once seen as unthinkable. Experience from the program and trips are brought back, passed on and shared to benefit the individual and community. Supported by the University YMCA. Cost to you is between $400 - $500.

Congratulations to our Fisher School Biz Quiz team!

Please join us in wishing Adam Letson, Elena Bloudek and Brian Hakk congratulations.  As a team, they placed 3rd overall out of 24 teams in the Ohio State Fisher School Biz Quiz. In addition, Brian took 2nd place in the individual round. The team represented Carlson in a very professional (and competitive!) manner, and we are extremely proud of them.
