GBCC Tips of the Week
Research shows that 70-80% of jobs are found through networking. Your job search strategy should focus on networking as one of the primary vehicles for finding a position. This is especially true in a slow economy. Practice communicating what you can offer and what you are seeking. Join a professional organization to meet new people in your area of interest. Brainstorm how to identify professional contacts. Start with those you know best and ask to be referred to others. Towards this end, consider the contacts listed in the Edge, professors, GBCC career coaches, classmates, family members, and former and current colleagues. Develop a network tracking system, such as a spreadsheet tracking form, to manage your professional network. Keep your contacts informed of your progress and share information useful to others. Remember that creating connections and building relationships takes time. It is never too early to get started.
